Listen to this article

One of the leading Li-Fi technology companies PureLiFi recently announced $9.3 Million Series B funding round. PureLiFi products are offering the three core characteristics: high-speed, bi-directional and mobile/networked wireless access. Below is our interview with Harald Burchardt, Chief Operating Officer at PureLiFi:

Harald Burchardt

Q: What is PureLiFi? Could you tell us PureLiFi’s startup story?

A: pureLiFi was founded by Prof. Harald Haas and Dr. Mostafa Afgani as a spin-out from the University with the goal of commercializing LiFi technology. Both of the founders have been active in the area of LiFi research for over a decade and Prof. Haas introduced the concept to the world in his inaugural TED talk in 2011. Since then, the company has raised various investment rounds with the ultimate goal of creating a ubiquitous LiFi infrastructure that will become an inherent part of future mobile networks.

Q: Tell us something more about your products and solutions?

A: Since its founding, pureLiFi has significantly grown its technical capabilities delivering three LiFi products that represent the state-of-the-art the technology has to offer. The LiFi-X, the companies latest release, is the world’s first LiFi dongle and will form the basis for initial LiFi infrastructure rollouts. Effectively, our solutions enable the lighting infrastructure to perform two key functions: illumination and communication. Already, our solution are able to offer greater user data rates than state-of-the-art radio-based systems and we expect this to increase substantially in the coming years.

Q: What are your key features?

A: pureLiFi products distinguish themselves from the competition by offering the three core characteristics of any mobile technology: high-speed, bi-directional and mobile/networked wireless access. The LiFi-X enables customers to transform their lighting infrastructure into a wireless cellular communications system that enables users to roam throughout the space while obtaining ubiquitous wireless coverage throught the lights. The ability to handover and move through various LiFi cells is, to the best of our knowledge, unique to pureLiFi solutions and a key to the technology’s mass-market adoption.

Q: You’ve recently announced a $9.29 Million Series B funding round; what’s your next step?

A: The recent Series B funding will not only allow us to accelerate our progression towards the development of embeddable LiFi modules that can be integrated into mobile devices, but also expand our commercial efforts and grow the LiFi eco-system with key partners in the industries, such as lighting and mobile communications, that LiFi will transform. Furthermore, the partnership with Temasek will open up new opportunities for the company and ideally a new market segment in Singapore and Asia the company can embrace.

Q: What can we expect from you in the future? What are your plans?

A: pureLiFi will continue to push the state-of-the-art of LiFi technology in terms of the products and solutions and will continue to lead the drive towards its adoption as a mass-market technology enhancing consumer’s desires for ever higher data rates and privacy. The partnerships the company is entering will enable it to continue to spearhead the market and influence the global players, creating new markets and growth opportunities for the entire eco-system. Ultimately, we see LiFi sitting alongside 5G and other mobile technologies as core part of how people interact in the future.
