Below is our recent interview with Manish Gupta, CMO at Redis Labs:

Manish Gupta

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Redis Labs?

A: Redis Labs is the home of Redis, the world’s most popular in-memory database, and commercial provider of Redis Enterprise that delivers superior performance, matchless reliability and unparalleled flexibility for personalization, machine learning, IoT, search, ecommerce, social, metering, and many more solutions worldwide.

Redis Labs is consistently ranked as a leader in top analyst reports on NoSQL, in-memory databases, operational databases, and database-as-a-service. It is trusted by over 8,500 enterprise customers, including six Fortune 10 companies, three of the four credit card issuers, three of the top five communication companies, three of the top five healthcare companies, six of the top eight technology companies, and four of the top seven retailers.

Q: Tell us more about your products.

A: Redis Enterprise, available as a service in public and private clouds, as downloadable software, in containers, and for hybrid cloud-on-prem deployments, powers popular Redis use cases such as high-speed transactions, job & queue management, user session stores, real time data ingest, notifications, content caching and time-series data.

Redis Enterprise technology implementation ensures the seamless linear scaling, blazing fast performance, reliability and security that customers expect from enterprise-grade databases.

Redis on Flash

Redis Enterprise allows for creation of Redis on Flash (RoF) databases that extend your RAM capacity with local solid-state disks (SATA/NVMe-based) and to significantly store more data with less resources, reducing costs. Redis on Flash is not designed to be used as an alternative mechanism for data persistence – the same AOF and Snapshot data-persistence mechanisms are used with Redis on Flash. RoF is based on the core open-source Redis architecture with the following primary enhancements:

• Instead of keeping the entire dataset in RAM, RoF only keeps the keys and the Redis dictionary (the data structure behind the keys) in RAM, along with the “hot values” of the dataset (the working set). The “warm values”, the lesser used portion of the dataset, are kept on the local Flash storage.
• To avoid head-of-the line blocking scenarios resulting from the single-threaded nature of Redis, RoF is based on a multi-threaded asynchronous architecture that guarantees no blocking between a heavy request made to Flash and a light request made to RAM.

RediSearch

RediSearch is a powerful text search and secondary indexing engine, built on top of Redis as a Redis Module. Unlike Redis search libraries, it does not use Redis’ internal data structures. Using its own highly optimized data structures and algorithms, it allows for advanced search features, with high performance and a low memory footprint. It can perform simple text searches as well as complex structured queries, filtering by numeric properties and geographical distances.

• Ideal for searching frequently updated databases, without the need for batch indexing and service interrupts.
• Supports scaling across many servers, allowing it to easily grow to billions of documents on hundreds of servers.
• Simple to manage and maintain, and can serve as a standalone database, or augment existing Redis databases with advanced, powerful indexing capabilities.
• Extremely fast compared to other open-source search engines.

Active-Active Geo-Distribution (CRDT-based)

Active-active geo-distributed topology is achieved by implementing CRDTs (Conflict-free Replicated Data Types) in Redis Enterprise using a global database that spans multiple clusters.

CRDT-based Redis Enterprise provide three fundamental benefits over other geo-distributed solutions:

• It offers local latency on read and write operations, regardless of the number of geo-replicated regions and their distance from each other.
• It enables seamless conflict resolution (“conflict-free”) for simple as well as complex data types like those of Redis core.
• Even if the majority of Redis Enterprise replicas (for example 3 out of 5) is down, the remaining replicas s are uninterrupted and can continue to handle read and write operations.

Q: What makes Redis Enterprise the best choice?

A: Redis Enterprise allows organizations to combine the advantages of fast, world-class database technology and the innovation of a vibrant open source community. Recently, Redis was named the most loved database in Stack Overflow’s Developer Survey for the second year in a row across 183 countries.

Real-time streaming data ingest is a common requirement for many big data use cases. Organizations in fields like IoT, e-commerce, security, communications, entertainment, finance, and retail are finding themselves depending on timely and accurate data-driven decision-making, meaning that real-time data collection and analysis are no longer just a luxury but rather a necessity for success.

Q: You’ve announced Redis University, an online destination for Redis users and enthusiasts; could you tell us something more?

A: We announced Redis University, the first online education for Redis, at our Annual RedisConf in April, 2018. Redis University, was created to provide education to Redis users and enthusiasts, for free.

Redis University was designed to foster a sense of community by opening the door to new users and use cases. We want to give everyone in the ecosystem the opportunity to explore the full breadth of the Redis platform and share ideas that could spark future innovation.” We want users to be as effective as possible at Redis applications, sooner.

The university-style structure creates a rhythm to help students stay engaged and invested in their work, while also creating a feedback loop for Redis Labs. Online courses will run four to six weeks and include video tutorials, quizzes, demos and assignments with firm due dates. Students who complete the course with grades of 65 percent or higher will receive certificates of completion and online badges for their LinkedIn profiles. The initial course is designed as an introduction for developers at the beginning of their journey, but subsequent courses will appeal to a wider audience and include more administration-oriented classes for those in the more advanced stages.

Redis University also gives users of the Redis open source platform the opportunity to explore for free the advanced functionality of the Redis Enterprise solution, while sharing information and discussing applications and use cases with their peers. Redis University will launch two courses this year and run each of them twice, focusing initially on developers.

Q: Can you provide some real word use-cases?

A: Whitepages – Redis Labs’ breakthrough approach of extending Redis from RAM to Flash SSDs, with built-in intelligent data tiering, drastically reduces Whitepages’ operational costs without sacrificing performance. By leveraging Redis on Flash, Whitepages uses a fraction of the RAM storage previously used, saving them hundreds of thousands of dollars in infrastructure investment each year. Whitepages tested the performance and reliability of other competitive solutions but found that none could handle the full dataset size and still provide the single-digit latency that Redis could deliver.

eHarmony – eHarmony uses Redis Enterprise in several applications to deliver the highest level of responsiveness and interactive customer experience. Redis Enterprise fulfills many roles — from real time analytics, to supporting low latency match searches, to powering news feeds and profile data — delivering superior experience to the desktop as well as mobile users of eHarmony service. eHarmony selected Redis Labs as part of its ongoing initiatives to minimize operational overhead. The Redis data structures simplify processes for storing data, thus reducing the resources needed and accelerating time to market. Redis Enterprise, with its automated, seamless scaling and cost-effective low-touch manageability, provides a robust technology platform for their team, backed by the 24×7 support from the Redis Labs experts.
