Listen to this article

Asset Vision offers a modern approach to an age old problem; reducing IT costs in order for companies to free up budget for innovation. Their SaaS platform solution is designed to manage the IT complexities of the cloud era, with agentless discovery, forensic usage metering, normalization and asset optimization. Below is our interview with Bruce Aboudara, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Business Development at Scalable Software Inc.:

Q: Bruce, what’s the best thing about Scalable Software that people might not know about?

A: The best thing about Scalable Software is our people and their commitment to the success of our customers. There is an attitude of doing whatever it takes to help the customer get the results they are looking for from our tooling. Further, as a company born in the cloud age, we are without the older platforms, architectures and culture to hold us back from innovating as we move into the age of IoT. Our customers can count on deriving real value from our solutions.

Q: Could you explain the function and advantages of your Asset Vision?

A: Asset Vision is a purpose-built cloud platform developed to deliver IT Software and Asset Management applications. It is designed with the future in mind; a future where applications are delivered by cloud services and not dependent on costly upgrades and subject to obsolescence through neglect.

The primary benefit is that we help our customers reduce costs while adapting to change. The cloud era brings to the enterprise new types of technologies and delivery models to manage. Asset Vision unifies discovery, inventory, and normalization used in its ITAM and SAM applications to provide solutions to the challenges that these new technologies present.

For example, “discovery” in the world of SaaS requires access to both the list of enabled users by application, together with the applications the users have accessed. Having this information is useful because it enables correlation between who is licensed to use a feature and who actually uses a feature. Equally important, it provides for the detection of usage of the SaaS application that is outside of normal organizational control. These ”rogue” connections can lead to unauthorized access to company information, loss of intellectual property, or risk to proprietary information. Further, a company can easily be subject to the accrual of unbudgeted monthly service fees. In addition to traditional discovery of IT assets, Asset Vision was built with this new paradigm in mind.

Q: You’ve recently announced Asset Vision has surpassed 800 organizations around the world; tell us something more?

A: Our primary markets are North America, the UK and Australia. We have a small presence in mainland Europe that we are looking to grow as well. There is no particular vertical focus as we solve a very horizontal problem. The growth and acceptance of public cloud solutions has clearly changed over the past 18 months and that has helped fuel our expansion, as have the continued concerns over software audits.

What is rewarding is that we really began our go-to-market efforts in 2013 after about four years of building, testing, tweaking, and working with early-stage users to refine the first generation of the product. Since then, we have gone through 94 platform updates that continue to add functionality and refinements. By responding to requests from our prospects, we have been able to assure companies that when they decide to make an investment in Asset Vision they are “future-proofed.”

Q: What have been some major milestones over the last 12 months?

A: Of course the recently announced financial results are a very important milestone. But, I would add that the pace of innovation in our product has not slowed. As highlighted in the release, the number of new capabilities added has continued, and will continue. The 94 platform updates mentioned above represent a milestone with each release.

Also, the relationships we outlined in the release with the likes of Accenture and SoftwareOne are really strong indicators of the usefulness and value of our discovery, inventory, and normalization platform. As a small company, getting the attention of major players such as these really validates our value proposition.

Q: What are your plans for keeping Scalable Software on the forefront of technology innovation?

A: Besides being driven by our customers and strong connections to the analyst community, our Dev/Ops model of releasing new updates every eight to ten weeks creates a cadence for both Product Management and Development to continue to keep our product fresh and relevant.

We operate in a planning horizon of no longer than 18 months, but by having the release cycle we do, it allows us to react rapidly to changing market developments. One such area is what is called “Software within Software.” What this means is many organizations host their cloud-based software assets as extensions of their own networks through some extended VPN-type technologies. It is possible to query the cloud and scan devices locally to perform inventory tasks. Scalable is developing a new category of probe that could be used to connect to a customer’s cloud provider via public APIs. This provides the metadata about the hosted devices and associates it with the data collected by Asset Vision during an inventory scan.

Finally, we are continuing to invest in our people by adding the most skilled and motivated developers we can to help execute on our product plans. These people bring creativity and knowledge and keep us looking forward.
