Senstar: Four Decades Of Delivering Perimeter Security, Video Analytics And Video Management Solutions

Listen to this article

Senstar was established in 1981 with the objective of bringing security technologies originally targeted for military applications to the commercial market. Initially a seven-employee company, Senstar introduced its first product, Sentrax, a buried cable perimeter security technology, in September 1982 with early adopters including Correctional Service Canada, the British Home Office and Western Australia Corrections. Below is our recent interview with Jeremy Weese, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Senstar:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Senstar Corporation?

A: Senstar employs 200+ people worldwide, and boasts a broad range of security technologies including intelligent video management, video analytics, access control and innovative perimeter intrusion detection systems to offer a comprehensive suite of proven, integrated technologies.

Senstar products can be found in thousands of sites around the world including critical infrastructure, military, manufacturing and logistics, corrections, oil and gas, and transportation.

Q: You’ve recently introduced Senstar Safe Spaces™ Video Analytics Solution; can you tell us something more?

A: Senstar Safe Spaces™ is an all-in-one video analytics solution to help businesses operate safely amidst COVID-19 by monitoring adherence to health and safety protocols.

Developed using the latest innovations and benefitting from Senstar’s nearly 20 years of experience deploying video analytics solutions, Senstar Safe Spaces can help ensure employee and customer confidence as the world navigates new COVID-19 realities.

The product is a simple, compact appliance–the Senstar Edge Platform–preloaded with Face Mask Detection, Physical Distance Monitoring, Sanitization Station Monitoring, and Occupancy Monitoring video analytics. A ‘drop-in’ solution, it can be easily integrated into an existing video system or deployed on its own and works with any ONVIF camera and VMS.

While there are many new tools to help businesses monitor compliance with aspects of COVID-19 health and safety protocols, Senstar has taken the unique approach of providing a complete solution operating on a single, affordable, easy-to-use device with embedded analytics. Senstar Safe Spaces allows businesses to effectively monitor their premises, receive alerts when protocols are not followed, and ultimately operate safely.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your product portfolio?

A: Senstar develops and manufactures the world’s largest portfolio of intrusion detection technologies, consisting of fence sensors, buried sensors, above-ground sensors, and security management systems. In 2016, Senstar expanded its portfolio to include video management and video analytics when it acquired Canadian company Aimetis. Senstar also has personal duress systems and recently added access control.

This broad range of products puts Senstar in the unique position to offer more complete and sophisticated solutions by combining multiple layers of security that work together to provide increased capabilities and options.

Central to this vision is the Senstar Symphony™ video, security and information management platform. Symphony provides a common operating platform over which data from video surveillance networks, perimeter sensors, personal duress systems and access control hardware is synthesized using a common, shared fusion engine.

The platform incorporates the latest in video analytics, data visualization and artificial intelligence to provide true organization-level knowledge for better risk mitigation and business decisions.

Q: What can we expect from Senstar in next 6 months?

A: In 2021, Senstar will celebrate its 40th birthday! A lot has changed since 1981, but the company’s commitment to safeguarding people, places and property has always remained the same. We are extremely proud to reach this milestone and we are looking forward to continued success for many years to come.

Over the next six months, Senstar will have some exciting announcements as we continue to evolve our current technologies and develop new technologies to meet the security needs of our customers and partners.

Q: What’s the best thing about Senstar that people might not know about?

A: Senstar’s people are the company’s biggest strength. Unrivaled experience, service excellence and commitment to innovation allow Senstar to successfully address customers’ security requirements.

To ensure customers receive top quality systems that perform in the most extreme conditions, Senstar operates the world’s largest and most comprehensive private test facility of its kind. Aptly named the Sensor Integrated Test Environment (SITE), Senstar uses the 10-acre test site to design, test and showcase its product portfolio in real-world conditions. Located in Ottawa, Canada, SITE exposes Senstar technologies to a wide range of harsh environmental conditions ranging from -40°C in the winter and +40°C in the summer, with freezing rain and high winds in between.

SITE is a unique proving ground – an extension to Senstar development labs that allow engineers to push the boundaries of security technologies to help determine long-term reliability and product usability.
