Suggestic Uses Artificial Intelligence To Help People Make Optimal Food Choices

Listen to this article

Suggestic is a personalized nutrition service that helps people make optimal food choices for weight loss, chronic disease reversal and health improvement. Below is our recent interview with Shai Rozen, Cofounder & CMO at Suggestic:

Shai Rozen

Q: How it works?

A: We start by creating a “precision eating” plan according to the user’s personal goals and preferences, like vegetarian, gluten-free, or vegan. These plans are based on existing evidence-based protocols, for example, the Ketogenic diet, the Low FODMAP diet or the Mediterranean diet. Some of these plans are free, and others—like the ones curated by best-selling authors—are part of our subscription plan, Suggestic Plus.

Once users have their personalized diets the app helps them make the best fitting food decisions. Suggestic can offer suggestions, including over 1.5 million recipes that match the user’s personalized diet. Let the chatbot know what ingredients you have on hand and it will suggest the best recipes for those ingredients that work within the parameters of the diet. It can also help users with long-term meal planning and shopping lists.

This is all done with proprietary Artificial Intelligence technology.

Q: What is the Augmented Reality feature?

A: Even more exciting, Suggestic helps users order wisely from the menu at restaurants. When you enter an eatery, Suggestic will let you know if it has the menu on file. The app pulls from a dynamic database of more than half a million menus from restaurants all over the US. It can recognize the menu items and let you know in real time which ones work best with your personalized die. Simply point your camera at a menu to see what’s recommended.

The Suggestic app “reads” the menu and lets you know which dishes fall within the nutritional parameters of your diet. No more guesswork. Better yet, no more negotiating with the wait staff about how to prepare a special dish.

Q: Why is the world of dieting fraught with difficulties?

A: There are different reason for this. Just finding the right food for your specific needs it’s an extremely difficult task. First you need to filter the options to match certain requirements, like food sensitivities. Then, you need to consider your preferences, context and availability. That’s just the beginning.

Even if you don’t have sensitivities, there are hundreds of things we don’t think about when it comes to selecting food. Like the ways food interacts with our physiologies. You may consider nutritional values. But what about the way food interacts with our microbiome? Or the impact stress may have on digestion? Environmental toxins?

Even if we had all the information, which we don’t, it would take a superhuman mind to process all this data and come up with an actionable conclusion. This is when AI enters the picture and this is what we are trying to solve at Suggestic. Precision Eating.

Q: Tell us more about your eating plans?

A: Suggestic’s users get access to the best and latest eating plans from the best experts and can further personalize the plan they’ve chosen as a base. Soon, that personalization will include a number of lab tests.

We have engaged major players in the healthy eating arena. These renowned doctors and health advocates have contributed diets, meal plans, and easy-to-understand medical whys and hows. There are a number of specialized eating plans to choose from, including Dr. Mark Hyman, a New York Times best-selling author and creator of FOOD: What the heck should I eat.

Q: What can we expect from Suggestic in the future?

A: We are currently working on advancing our technology so it will determine what you should eat not just based on your nutritional needs, but your lab test results, such as genetics, microbiome and standard blood tests. For example, you may hear that the Mediterranean diet is good for you, but there are many different aspects of the Mediterranean lifestyle that you may not be considering. People in Greece and Italy have different microbiomes and they are exposed to different environments. Many also fast and are less stressed. In the coming months you’ll see all these capabilities appearing in Suggestic along with new and excited eating plans and health journeys created in partnership with our experts.
