Sym Delivers Security Workflow Platform Made For Engineers, By Engineers

Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Yasyf Mohamedali, CEO and Co-founder of Sym:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Sym?

A: Sym’s goal is to make it dead simple for any engineering team to embrace the latest best-practices in security workflows, while maintaining their velocity and culture.

Most teams today face a difficult tradeoff: slow down and be more secure, or push forward despite the risk. With Sym, you can have your cake and eat it too! Adopting new controls often requires a ton of R&D effort to build internal tools that ease adoption of the workflow, or else necessitates spending a ton of cash on clunky tools that people hate using. What we’ve done is pre-build the core of many common security workflow tools; we expose these primitives in an easily-customizable format so anyone can unobtrusively adopt them, bending the integration points to whatever their current setup is.

Q: What are some of the real-world results enterprises can expect with your solution?

A: In terms of real-world results, companies that adopt Sym can expect to easily accomplish and exceed their security goals, with less time and money spent, and a much lower maintenance burden than they’re accustomed to.

Q: Who are your clients and what are some of the key challenges you’re helping them solve?

A: Our clients largely fall into two buckets.

The first are mid-market B2B SaaS startups who are at the stage where they win or lose deals based on trust and genuine security posture. They normally did a SOC 2 or similar audit a couple years ago, and are now shifting to earn trust by rolling out proactive governance and security workflows. Our solution helps them tackle work that’s already on their roadmap, but much faster and much less obtrusively than they otherwise would have. A prime example of a company we serve in this space is LaunchDarkly.

The second bucket includes larger enterprises in heavily regulated industries. These companies often have smaller, resource-constrained engineering teams who are eager to adopt Sym in order to win back precious development cycles while remaining cutting-edge.

Q: You’ve recently raised $9 Million in a new funding round; can you tell us something more?

A: We raised a $3M seed back in March 2020, which we used to prove our hypothesis, build a proof-of-concept, and hire a team of heavy-hitting rockstars, including former CTOs and VPEs. More recently, we raised a $9M Series A to take our vision and scale it out to the broad array of companies we have the potential to help. With this money we’ll be building the next generation of our platform, scaling it to more customers, and growing the team.

Q: What is next on the roadmap for Sym?

A: We’re gearing up for beta rollouts of our product with a handful of representative organizations in Q1, and you can look out for a public product launch around Q3.
