Mode Analytics is a collaborative analytics platform that combines a powerful, web-based SQL editor with charting and sharing tools. Below is our interview with Derek Steer, CEO of Mode Analytics:
Q: Derek, tell us something more about Mode and your core competence?
A: Mode is a collaborative analytics platform built by analysts for analysts. With its powerful SQL query editor, built-in charts, and collaborative tools, Mode makes it easy for analysts to tie together their analytical process from end to end, and store it under version control in one centralized place. In doing so, Mode enables precision and flexibility that traditional drag-and-drop business intelligence tools don’t offer.
Q: What are main benefits of using your platform?
A: Rapidly growing companies like Zenefits, Lyft, Twitch, Thumbtack, TuneIn, and Unbounce have found that teams become more data-driven after adopting Mode. Mode makes it super easy for analysts to share work and build on the projects of other analysts on their teams. Then, by sharing reports out across the organization, business partners are able to self-serve data. The benefits are two-fold: it empowers everyone using data more often and reduces the amount of time analysts spend on repetitive work.

Q: What’s the ideal company that would benefit from your services?
A: Any company looking to unlock more value from their data can be a great fit for Mode. Most of our customers have a full-time analyst or analytics team who work with SQL. We believe SQL enables analysts and data scientists to answer questions that dashboards simply can’t. Q: Could you tell us something more about your funding? What are your plans for the future?
A: We’re thrilled to have the backing of Foundation Capital as we expand our platform and accelerate growth. We plan to use the resources to continue delivering on our vision for a product created by analysts, for analysts. In conjunction with today’s funding announcement, we also began the rollout of significant product changes that focus on streamlining an analysts’ workflow even further. Our customers see themselves as data storytellers, and these improvements will dramatically increase the ease and flexibility with which they tell their stories.

Q: Is it possible to use Mode for free? Tell us something more about your pricing?
A: Mode is priced to make sharing analysis worry-free and simple. For businesses analyzing data in their private database (we connect to a variety of SQL-like databases), Mode is $249 per month per analyst. Anyone within a private organization who simply views reports has free access. Mode is also free for educational institutions and nonprofits.
We really believe in data analysis can help everyone make better decisions. We offer a lot of free resources to the analytics community. First, anyone can upload public data to our data warehouse and analyze it for free. Second, we provide a learning resource called SQL School that aspiring analysts can use alongside our product.
