The Legal Profession: Careers Worth Checking Into

Listen to this article

At one time, the most you could hope for as a legal professional was being a secretary or a full-blown lawyer. Today’s modern world makes it possible for you to be in the legal profession without being either one or maybe even a few of them. In this blog and others, you’ll find a few of the careers in the legal profession worth checking into after you graduate and decide to join the legal field of work.

Legal Marketing
Legal marketers are just what they sound like. They do marketing for legal firms and lawyers. Marketing is something that every lawyer truly needs whether they are in a firm or going it solo. There isn’t nearly as much school required to become a marketer as there is to become a lawyer, so if you’re in a hurry, this might be the best choice for you.

Court Reporter
Court reporting has been around for quite some time, but its importance is no less than legal marketing. Court reporters are responsible for recording court testimony, speeches, statements, and legal proceedings in a timely and super accurate manner. They’re also responsible for reading back any parts of those recordings that the judge or lawyer might ask for during the trial. You must be able to record over 200 words per minute. Since fewer and fewer people are choosing to go into this part of the legal field, jobs are plentiful and the pay is pretty good.

Court Interpreters
Working in a jurisdiction where there are many different races and nationalities represented means that the area will need court interpreters. If you’re bi-lingual, then this well-paying job could be the right choice for you.

A Jury Consultant
Consulting in any form has gained popularity lately and never more so than as a jury consultant. A good jury consultant helps the lawyer who hires them by giving them insight into jurors before the lawyer makes their final choices. They also help the attorney craft their arguments in order to win over the jury. These consultants can earn six-figure salaries, according to just how good they are and how in-demand they are. If you choose to become a jury consultant and get to work on a big-money case, it’s possible to earn hundreds of thousands off that one case as well. Of course, this is according to how experienced and in demand you are as a consultant, so don’t expect big money right off the bat.

A Mediator
Mediators have enjoyed growth for well over 10 years now. These are people who help settle cases before they go to trial and are used more often than you might think. In fact, most cases are settled way ahead of a trial, and most of the time that is through the use of a resolution expert, such as a mediator. The demand is high, so once you become a resolution expert you should have no problems finding clients or work.

Legal Secretary
Of course, there is still always room for legal secretaries in the legal field. If you want to be in the legal field, but don’t want to look into being a lawyer or any of the other possible choices, then being a legal secretary is a great choice as well. Your job is to take care of files, answer phones, organize, and schedule cases and appointments for the lawyer or judge you work for. The responsibilities of legal secretaries have grown quite a bit over the years.

These are just a few of the choices you have for careers in the legal field if you don’t want to become a lawyer. The pay is great for most of them, but the school time required is a whole lot shorter.
