The Self Leadership LAB Helps Drive Results From The Inside Out

Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Laura Dewey, the Founder of The Self Leadership LAB:

Laura Dewey

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to The Self Leadership LAB?

A: The Self Leadership LAB is a coaching & training company devoted to developing the skills of self leadership in individuals, executives and teams.

Q: What is self leadership?

A: All goals have a Point A and a Point B; where you are and where you want to be. This journey can be as simple as getting to work on time or as complex as getting a promotion, landing an important contract, or selling a company. The path between Point A and Point B can be full of stress and struggle or it can filled with a sense of grace and ease. The skills of self leadership make all the difference.

These skills include things like: Learning to respond rather than react, mitigating stress and anxiety, dealing with overwhelm, increasing confidence and esteem, courage, navigating difficult people, mastering worry and fear, overcoming bad habits, gaining power over procrastination, making space for creativity and innovation, self-care, work/life flow, and so much more.

Q: Why should professional be concerned about being skilled in self leadership?

A: Life and work are full of challenges, often with variables we cannot control. A strong self-leader is not rocked by external circumstances. Since they understand the physiology and psychology of their responses, they have the ability to access clear, objective thinking, even in the most difficult circumstance. This skill alone, sets the self-leader apart from others, making him or her more effective, trusted, relied-upon and promotable.

The first outcome reported by clients in The LAB is a dramatic reduction in stress. Who can’t benefit from that?

Q: Laura, what’s your Formula for an Exceptional Life & Workplace?

A: It’s a 3-part formula: BE Highly Self Aware, LEARN Cool New Skills, and DO Experiments & Build Habits.

Harvard Business Review calls self-awareness, “The one quality that trumps all.” I like to compare it to GPS. GPS needs to know two things before it can operate: our current location and desired destination. The same is true for us. In order to grow, we must be able to take an accurate self-assessment of where we are right now. Self-awareness is the foundation of everything we do at The LAB.

As for cool new skills? There’s a whole lot of stuff no one taught us in school. Strangely, these are the things that determine how effective we are in our lives and careers. We teach those missing skills at The LAB.

The third part of the formula is what makes the lab The LAB: DO Experiments & Build Habits. There is no shortage of information out there, but information alone does not create transformation. That comes from experiential learning; actually applying learning to your life and work. The LAB is all about experiential learning, understanding that firsthand experience makes learning more enjoyable and sustainable.

Q: What kind of training programs do you offer to your clients?

A: I work one-on-one with individuals and executives in 6-month coaching terms. This allows enough time and space for remarkable transformation. Some clients value our partnership so much, they stay with me for years.

I also work with teams to elevate the whole workplace in productivity, communication, collaboration, job satisfaction and bottom-line results. Ideally this is a 6-12 month project, customized to meet unique needs, involving both coaching and group training, where results can be measured and celebrated. That said, we have been known to do smaller projects involving coaching or skills development alone from time to time.

Q: Why is it important to work on your leadership development? It shouldn’t be too hard, right?

A: I have to admit, I giggled when I first read this question. Leadership development shouldn’t be too hard but the reality is, it is. Why? Because it involves humans. Each human in the leadership equation has a complex inner world that affects their every thought and behavior. Leadership is far from static, so a conscientious leader is never finished with leadership development. Never. The C-level leaders I coach know there is always a new level of mastery available: more vision, executive presence, courage, and influence to be had, even at the top of their game.

Q: What’s new at The Self Leadership LAB?

A: I’m excited to announce that The Self Leadership LAB Podcast launched in late January and made it to the New and Noteworthy section of iTunes. If you want to know more about self leadership, you’ll find great foundational content in the first two episodes.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: My plan is to continue to build my team and bring the skills of self leadership to even more individuals and teams. I also intend to continue to bring amazing content to the podcast and have plans to birth an online learning component to The Self Leadership LAB by the end of 2019.
