United Virtualities Accelerates Your Business By Designing Custom Strategies And Solutions To Help You Win

Below is our recent interview with Morgan Friedman from United Virtualities:

Q: Can you tell us something more about the company and what you do?

A: It’s always hard to summarize something so complex and so awesome, like United Virtualities, in just a few words. In a few sentences, I would say: United Virtualities helps companies bring out their best in every way using strategy and technology. We help companies accelerate their business by defining the right technological solutions they need, planning them out, implementing them and then ongoing, we track, follow-up, iterate, to continually improve. We do this for all major industries and platforms but our strongest focus and most of our work is in online commerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and Adobe Experience Manager.

Q: It’s an interesting phrase you use, ‘accelerate their business’, what does that mean exactly?

A: Yes! It’s a slogan we created as we feel it rightly captures the spirit of what UV does. We find organizations typically have many goals, but they can be categorized as one or more of the following: increasing revenue, decreasing cost and boosting user engagement. When we say we help organizations accelerate their business, this specifically means that we solve their challenges in one or more of these categories. We get to know their business operations and processes inside out; we capture and clearly outline their goals they want to reach; and then we put together the right strategy and solution, with an emphasis on technology, to help them meet and exceed their goals.

Q: You’ve recently cut the grand opening tape to your fourth international office, in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; could you tell us something more?

A: Sure, I can talk about it for hours! I think we can’t separate our new Barcelona office from the awesomeness of its head, Gustavo Martinez, whom we’re beyond thrilled to have on board. He was the Global Chairman & CEO of Worldwide, of J. Walter Thompson. Not only will he help lead EMEA for us, but he’s a pleasure to work with. UV has been growing year over year for the past decade and we have been seeing more and more of a demand for our services across Europe and the Middle East. We are excited to work more closely with our existing EMEA clients, and establish partnerships with more as we continue to grow our office in Barcelona.

Q: Why UV? What makes you the best choice?

A: Ha! That’s my favorite question. I have a few more hours on this one but I’ll keep it down. There are tons of great enterprise dev shops, with tons of great developers. We’re one, and there are many more. But there are a couple of things that, in my utterly biased opinion, put us on a tier onto ourselves.

The first is our customer service. We’re a customer-service FIRST company. You know the old solution, “the client is always right?” Well, that’s a mantra at UV. But it’s not just that they’re always right, but that we go to extreme efforts to figure out what they’ll want, what they’ll need, what they will be right about, and do all that, in advance. We try as hard as we can to be mind-readers. It’s part of our training manual – well, actually, it isn’t, but I’ve been wanting to add it to it.

Another difference is that we’re just fast. We say we “accelerate businesses” and by that we mean that, every part of the process, we have fast turn-arounds. We’d rather show you something early when it’s not finished, so you can provide feedback, than wait until the last minute when it’s perfect. Our team checks email and messages all day so we can respond to everything as fast as it happens and as needed. In our quest to accelerate everything, we have found some bumps, as a matter of fact: for example, there are still only 24 hours in the day and our efforts to change that have failed. That was a joke!

A third difference is our unique balance between flexibility and process-orientation. Let me explain. Most companies I know are either big bureaucracies with stumbling bureaucracies, or lean little machines with a few genius developers but who do everything custom on the spot, without thinking through the challenges of processitizing everything. As one of our core mantras, we try hard to balance those two extremes, to get the best of both worlds.

A fourth and final difference is that we put our integrity out there, first and foremost. We subscribe to old-fashioned concepts like “honor” and believe that we have nothing, truly nothing, if we don’t have our honor or our word. For us to engage in complex transactions of many sorts and do a lot of work fast, the trust has to be absolute in all directions — and that’s precisely what we try to do.

Q: Who are your primary clients and what are some of the key challenges you are helping them solve?

A: Our primary clients tend to be Global 2000 or Global 5000 (if such a list existed) companies, such as HP, J.Crew, Godiva and Scholastic. Technical challenges aside, one of the biggest blockers faced by many of our clients is even figuring out what they need to do in regards to their commerce and digital initiatives, particularly Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Adobe Experience Manager challenges. A major brand knows they need a new ecommerce site, and it must be fast, modern and by the nature of their products, complex — and we’ll help them figure out and plan our what they need, and how to do it. And then, of course, we’ll make the magic happen!

Q: What are the company’s plans and goals for the future?

A: We believe that the true competition isn’t against others — but against yourself. On the personal level and on the corporate level, as well. (At least I believe that on the personal level, I can’t talk for anyone else. I should learn from our team how to read other’s minds better!). We’re trying to excel even more at a bunch of internal metrics we measure against: how do we respond to clients even faster? How do we develop and deliver software even faster while maintaining the same high level of quality? How do we scale the company even more while not only not reducing the quality of our work but by increasing the quality of our work? And so forth. By constantly measuring ourselves and systematically improving at an individual level, it’s inevitable that the organization as a whole will continue to grow stronger and stronger. It’s what we have been doing for over a decade now, and what we plan to continue doing. As far as specific company plans, stay tuned, we have two exciting announcements forthcoming at the end of Q3 and start of Q4!
