How To Use Vercel?

Follow this guide to host a standard web application on Vercel utilizing a Git integrated workflow:

Step 1: Initialize Your Code Base and Push to GitHub

Before touching Vercel, store your code files inside a remote repository provider.

Open your terminal window and point it to your local project folder:

cd path/to/your/project

Initialize a local repository, stage your assets, and save your initial commit:

git init
git add .
git commit -m "Initial project commit"

Visit GitHub, select New Repository, and type a name for your project. Do not check the boxes to generate a README or .gitignore file.

Copy the terminal commands displayed on your new GitHub setup screen to link and push your files:

git remote add origin github.com
git branch -M main
git push -u origin main

Step 2: Create and Authenticate Your Vercel Account

  1. Open the Vercel Sign-Up Portal inside your web browser.
  2. Click Continue with GitHub to directly link your credentials.
  3. Authorize the official Vercel application permissions when prompted by GitHub to grant access to repositories.

Step 3: Import Your Project Repository

  1. From your main Vercel Dashboard, locate and click the Add New… dropdown element, then click Project.
  2. Under the Import Git Repository block, locate your recently pushed repository from the list and click Import.

Step 4: Configure Settings and Execute Deployment

  1. On the configuration screen, Vercel will auto detect your technical framework preset (e.g., Next.js, Vite, Create React App, or “Other” for standard HTML).
  2. (Optional) If your web application requires specific API credentials or secret databases, expand the Environment Variables tray and insert your key value pairs.
  3. Click the Deploy button. The system will spin up an isolated build container, parse your code, optimize assets, and distribute them to the Edge network.
  4. Within seconds, a confirmation screen will appear providing a live production web address ending in .vercel.app.

Step 5: Test Automated Continuous Deployment

Go back to your local computer terminal, edit any visible text or asset in your source file, and save it.

Push this modification up to GitHub:

To replace your default .vercel.app link with a custom domain (like example.com), you need to add the domain to your Vercel project settings and configure your registrar’s DNS records. Your original Vercel URL stays active during this change, ensuring zero downtime.

Step 1: Add the Domain in Vercel

  1. Log into your Vercel Dashboard and select your specific project.
  2. Click on the Settings tab located at the top navigation bar.
  3. Select Domains from the left side menu panel.
  4. Type your apex domain (e.g., yourdomain.com) into the input box and click Add.
  5. Keep the recommended option selected, which automatically adds both the root domain (yourdomain.com) and the www subdomain (www.yourdomain.com), redirecting one to the other.

Once added, Vercel will display an “Invalid Configuration” status box showing the exact DNS records you need to copy.

Step 2: Configure Your DNS Records

Log into the third party registrar where you bought your domain (such as GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Google Domains). Find your domain’s DNS Management / Advanced DNS settings panel and insert the following two records provided by Vercel:

The Apex/Root Domain Record

This routes the main address (yourdomain.com) to Vercel’s global servers. []

  • Type: A
  • Name / Host: @
  • Value / Points to: 76.76.21.21 (Double check the exact string shown on your individual Vercel card).

The WWW Subdomain Record

This handles visitors typing the www prefix (www.yourdomain.com).

  • Type: CNAME
  • Name / Host: www
  • Value / Points to: cname.vercel-dns-0.com

(Note: If you encounter an existing CNAME record with a host named www, edit that record instead of adding a duplicate).

Step 3: Verification and Live Launch

  1. Go back to your Vercel Domains Settings panel.
  2. The platform will continuously scan for your new records.
  3. When the records propagate, the status will switch to a green “Valid Configuration” notification.
  4. Vercel automatically creates and provisions a free SSL certificate (HTTPS) immediately after successful verification.

Note: While verification often takes only a few minutes, full global DNS propagation across internet service providers can sometimes take up to 24 hours.
