Woodfibre LNG Is A Model For Next-Generation LNG That Will Support Global Climate Goals

Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Rebecca Scott, Director of Communications at The Woodfibre LNG:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: The Woodfibre LNG project is located approximately 7 km west-southwest of Squamish, British Columbia (located midway between Vancouver and Whistler). The project is gearing up to start pre-construction of a single train, liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility on the previous Woodfibre pulp mill site. The facility will have a storage capacity of 250,000 m3 and produce approximately 2.1 million tonnes per year of LNG using 100 per cent renewable hydroelectric technology. Once operational, the facility will produce and export the cleanest, most technologically advanced LNG in the world. Woodfibre LNG is also the only industrial project in Canada, and possibly in the world, to have received an environmental approval from an Indigenous people in the absence of a treaty. Woodfibre LNG Limited is a privately held Canadian company based in Vancouver, and a subsidiary of Pacific Energy Corporation (Canada) Limited.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: This is a great step forward for our project. It’s also a huge step for clean energy. With McDermott, Woodfibre has been able to design the cleanest and most advanced LNG export facility ever conceived…and now we’re announcing a timetable for getting it built so we can provide the world’s most sustainable stable energy to the countries that need it most.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?

A: Canada’s natural gas industry is the best regulated, most sustainable, most responsible, most stable energy source in the world. Countries like China that are dependent on coal, need an alternative. Right now these countries are moving back to coal because gas supply is limited – and expensive.

Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: We’re looking forward to starting pre-construction in early 2022.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: Woodfibre LNG is a model for next-generation LNG that will support global climate goals. In addition to our industry-leading emissions reductions, Woodfibre is also proud of our groundbreaking work to go beyond consultation to collaboration with the local Squamish Nation community. Indigenous reconciliation and the principles of UNDRIP are at the core of our sustainable philosophy.
