Best Features To Look For In A Photography Drone

Listen to this article

If you want to take your photography to the next level, consider utilizing a drone. Drones have come such a long way since they first emerged on the market, making it easier than ever to take the best aerial photographs wherever you are. They are also a handy tool to have when it comes to commercial photography. There’s so much you can do with drones to expand your talent and to help you make extra money on the side. All drones are not created equal though, and there are certain features you don’t want to miss out on.

Resolution

The most important thing you want to pay attention to for photography purposes is the resolution, or image quality. If you just want to take cool pictures with no intention of printing them and/or selling them, then resolution doesn’t really matter that much. The higher the resolution, the more pixels, or details, will be in the picture. If you plan on doing commercial printing, such as drone real estate photography, you’ll need a high resolution to be able to print large high-quality photographs. If you’re brand new to drone photography, you can start off with a low-resolution, inexpensive drone to play around with and learn the basis of before stepping up into the more expensive, and higher resolution ones.

Battery Life

Short flight syndrome is something many drones on the market face. Drones typically do not have a long flight time, and usually last around 20-30 minutes max. Many drone manufacturers will advertise a certain flight time, but the actual flight time may be lower, which is why it can be helpful to read reviews to determine what the true flight time is. For commercial photography, try to find a drone with a flight time around 25-30 minutes. The good thing about drones is you can carry several charged backup batteries with you while on the job to make sure you get all the shots you need.

GPS and Return to Home

Return to Home, or RTH, is a handy feature you might want to consider when shopping for a drone you’ll use for photography. Return to Home doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll return to your home, but that the drone will return to the point where it launched from when the battery starts to die, or with just the press of a button. The drones with the GPS Return to Home feature means they have an actual GPS system inside of them that saves their exact launch point so they can return to it when the RTH feature is activated. The One Key return features are usually found in the lesser expensive drones and are basically the same as pressing the back button. Keep in mind that you’re not able to fly a drone everywhere, but you can download an app to find the areas you’re allowed to fly in.

Front Sensors

If you want a quality drone that will last, make sure it has front sensors. The front sensors are a way for the drone to detect and avoid colliding with things. Some drones can have multiple sensors all over the body, but the most popular ones have sensors on the front and/or sides. Having sensors means the drone will be safe when it’s flying, and it will be able to avoid colliding into objects that could cause damage.

If you own a business and are planning on using your drone photography commercially, make sure to read up about it and follow all of the rules and regulations required. Drones come in a range of prices and qualities, so it can make all the difference in the world to take the time to fully research the ones you are most interested in.
