AMD - Together we advance

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a leading chipmaker, has announced plans to invest around $400 million in India over the next five years. The investment is part of the company’s strategy to back India’s ambition of becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing hub. The announcement was made by AMD CTO Mark Papermaster at the annual semiconductor conference SemiconIndia 2023.

AMD’s Expansion in India

AMD’s investment will be used to set up its largest design center in Bengaluru, a city in southern India. The new facility, which is expected to open by the end of this year, will cover an area of 500,000 square feet. This expansion will bring the total number of AMD offices in India to 10, including locations in Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

The company plans to expand its research and development capabilities in India to drive semiconductor design innovation. This move aligns with the Indian government’s mission to strengthen the country’s semiconductor talent and industry.

AMD’s History and Workforce in India

AMD started its operations in India 22 years ago, in 2001. The company currently employs more than 6,500 people in the country, along with 3,000 partners and contractors. With the new investment, AMD plans to expand its workforce in India by an additional 3,000 engineers by the end of 2028.

India’s Ambition to Become a Global Semiconductor Hub

India is striving to become a major hub for semiconductors globally. In 2021, the Indian government announced a $10 billion incentive program to attract chipmakers to establish local facilities in the country. However, the original version of the scheme had to be revised in June due to a lack of expected response from global companies.

Other semiconductor manufacturers, including Applied Materials and Micron, have also announced significant investments in India. Applied Materials plans to invest $400 million to set up its engineering center in India, while Micron aims to invest up to $825 million to build a semiconductor plant in the country.

Looking Ahead

AMD’s planned investment and expansion in India mark a significant milestone for the company and the country’s semiconductor industry. As AMD continues to grow and innovate, it is poised to play a crucial role in India’s journey to become a global semiconductor hub.
