Helpful - your clarity in caregiving

Helpful, a startup focusing on supporting family caregivers, has secured $7.5 million in seed funding. The company aims to alleviate the administrative burdens of caregiving by integrating a loved one’s medical records, insurance benefits, medications, after-visit summaries, and care plans into a single app. The funding comes at a time when the demand for caregiving in the U.S. is high, with data showing that the time spent on caregiving amounts to some $600 billion of unpaid care.

Helpful’s Services and Unique Features

Helpful’s app is designed to bring insurance benefits, medical records, and caregiving resources into one place. The company charges payors, allowing it to offer the app free to family members of Original Medicare (parts A & B), following applicable legal guidelines.

Helpful differentiates itself from other caregiving apps by focusing on the administrative aspects of caregiving. The company leverages the most recent regulatory requirements for payors and providers to integrate a loved one’s medical records, including existing insurance benefits, medications, after-visit summaries, and care plans. It also provides personalized and localized caregiver benefits and training on medical conditions.

Company Origins and Growth

Helpful was founded by Wes Donohoe, who witnessed the toll that caregiving was taking on family and friends. Before Helpful, Donohoe served as the chief product officer for primary care practice Everside Health and was vice president of product at One Medical.

Helpful’s app launches with a payor partner and a waitlist of around 4,000 people, which is growing at about 2,000 people per week. The company plans to use the new funding to build products and integrate services.

Looking Ahead

With its recent funding and unique focus on the administrative burdens of caregiving, Helpful is poised to make a significant impact in the caregiving industry. The company’s innovative approach to integrating medical records and insurance benefits into a single app could set a new standard for caregiving support, providing much-needed assistance to the millions of Americans acting as caregivers.
