Q: What’s the best thing about Pininfarina that people might not know about?
A: Today in the year of the 90 anniversary of the company I like to outline how special Pininfarina is: in particular in 1961 the creation of a family name joining the nickname Pinin to the last name Farina was, if not the best, certaily the most exclusive thing that my Grandfather could invent. Only one Pininfarina family exists in the world and we have accompanied the story of the company through our 3 generations.
Q: You’ve recently celebrated 90 years; can you tell us something more?
A: We had scheduled several events for 2020 and we only made one of them on february 18 at the Triennale in Milan, just a few days before the start of the crisis. The pandemic has forced us to postpone all the events to year 90+1 , the first year of the decade that will lead us to our centenary.I can confirm that in may 2021 the first edition of a new Concours of Elegance named “Città di Torino ” will host an outstanding parade of the best automobiles of our history; after this two special events will be organized in the US , one in Pebble Beach in august and another one in Miami in december. The message that we want to give is that after the crisis the company will be ready to relaunch itself towards the future: in particular on may 22 2020,the actual 90 birthday, I announced an international contest for design and architecture students and I believe this is a very good way to attract the designers of the future.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your current projects?
A: In the area of architecture at the above february event in Milan we displayed a new luxury residential project in Costa Brava for the spanish developer Excem. Then 2 projects scheduled for presentation at the Geneva Motor Show have been announced at the beginning of march: the strategic engineering partnership with Bosch and Benteler and the full electric hypercar Battista Anniversario, which is being developed in collaboration with our sister company Automobili Pininfarina and will be built in 5 units in our workshop in Cambiano. On may 6 Vinsmart , a member of the vietnamite conglomerate Vingroup, announced the extension of the partnership with Pininfarina from automotive design (the 2 Vinfast cars presented in Paris in 2018) to the sector of new generation smartphones. On may 13 the multisensorial on board experience demonstrator “Autonomia”was shown with the purpose to investigate the driving experience of the future. So,despite of the lockdown, the beginning of 2020 has been characterized by a good level of vitality.
Q: Can you tell us something about Pininfarina Engineering?
A: Historically Pininfarina engineering is perceived as competence in body architecture and aerodynamics, support to advanced design in terms of its industrial feasibility and techical know how behind limited volume manufacturing. I would define as “niche engineering “. The last news in this sector is our contribution to the rolling chassis “Electric drive systems 2.0 ” in partnership with the two german companies Bosch and Benteler. This important design/engineering combination will be a relevant new platform for e-mobility . Also I want to add that a point of strenght of our engineering is represented by the international connections provided in 2 key automotive b2b markets by our offices in Munich and Shangai.

Q: What are your plans?
A: Just to mention some: to refocus continuously on design taking inspiration from changes in the society; to investigate the user experience; to invest in promising design verticals such as boats, aerospace, mobility systems, industrial and interior design , and architecture ; to improve our international relations through our offices in China Germany and the US; to improve our sinergies with the companies belonging to our main shareholder , the Mahindra Group.

They belong to many different countries : Bosch is in Germany, Bovet in Switzerland , Cyrela in Brasil , De Rosa in Italy, Excem in Spain , Hairmax in the US, Pasqualotto in Brasil, Pininfarina Segno in Italy, Princess Yachts in the Uk, Reflex and Rossinavi in Italy. Once again, Pininfarina is italian but very much international!
