Below is our recent interview with Rebecca Eyre, Director of Communications at DogSpot:

Rebecca Eyre

Q: Rebecca, could you tell us something more about DogSpot?

A: DogSpot is a Brooklyn-based startup that makes state-of-the-art sidewalk sanctuaries for dogs, providing a place for dogs to wait while their owners go into stores that can’t allow dogs inside. DogSpots are shaped like dog houses, but are air-conditioned, self-sanitizing, internet-connected, and camera-monitored. In response to the dog owner’s dilemma of what to do when encountering a “pet-free” establishment, DogSpot makes communities more dog-friendly and more walkable, which is good for dogs, dog owners and businesses alike. A safe, legal, and convenient alternative to tethering or leaving dogs in cars, when leaving dogs at home isn’t a good option, DogSpot’s goal is to make life better for all parties involved.

Q: How exactly does it work?

A: DogSpot is a high-tech pet amenity that provides a network of smart houses across the country for their members. Members reserve and rent DogSpots through the DogSpot app, similar to Citibike or Car2Go. The app features a live map which allows them to find a nearby DogSpot, unlock the house, monitor the house temperature, keep an eye on their dog in the Puppy Cam, and other features. As a back up, members are given an RFID member card which integrates with their account and acts as their second key.

Q: Can you give us insights into DogSpot’s features? Tell us more about the technology behind DogSpots?

A: When developing DogSpot, we considered our experience as dog owners and also consulted with countless vets in order to ensure the wellness of all dogs entering our houses. All materials used are vet-grade, tamper-proof and non-porous, which keeps the houses secure and safe. The house also features an auto-sanitizing UVC light that eliminates viruses and bacteria (including parvovirus) between each use. Additionally, DogSpots are equipped with heat, A/C, and forced-air ventilation that keeps the air fresh and the temperature comfortable. DogSpot also provides 24/7 customer service and remote monitoring to ensure that every session meets their high quality control standards. DogSpot is a first of its kind technology, and many of its features are patented.

Q: What’s next for DogSpot? Do you have plans to grow, expand or diversify?

A: DogSpot is poised to expand nationally this summer! What started as a startup with a local pilot in Brooklyn where DogSpot is based will soon be a bi-coastal network, with over a hundred of locations set to launch in the coming months. DogSpot strives to make the world better for dog owners and dogs alike, and in doing so, support local retail and strengthen communities. We are looking to make communities into truly “dog-friendly” areas, where no pup will be tied up, left in a hot car, or turned away from their owner’s favorite establishments. The more places dogs can go, the more time they get to spend with their best friends.
