Below is our recent interview with Sue Delegan, CEO at Brutus Broth:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Brutus Broth?
A: My sister Kim and I founded Brutus Broth through a passion and commitment to enhance our beloved pups’ diets while giving back to the community. Humans have used bone broth for hundreds of years to treat many ailments…why not create a bone broth for man’s best friend to reap the same benefits? Kim and I spent hundreds of hours researching the marketplace and realized that bone broth for dogs was a speciality item that was often hard to find or overpriced. We wanted to create a product that was superior, fortifying it with incredible joint supplements and turmeric, while being affordable and accessible to all pet owners. Our Bone Broth is aseptically packed, ready to serve and has a two year shelf life. We like to say Brutus Bone Broth is the luxury item for the everyday pup!
Q: What is your story?
A: Our story began over Thanksgiving dinner in 2016 when my sister-in-law asked to what we attribute Brutus’ longevity. The answer “Love and Grandma’s Bone Broth”. For years when Brutus would visit his Grandma in the country she would make him Bone Broth to pour over his kibble. As a large breed dog who led a very active and long life we found that adding Bone Broth to his diet not only provided him with a tastier meal but gave him added nutritional benefits. We wanted to share Brutus’ secret of his longevity with others through our Bone Broth but also through love. Our mission is to provide nutrition to your pet while giving back to the community. Brutus has been loved since the day we rescued him from a shelter 13 years ago, it is now our turn to give back the love. A portion of our proceeds go to animal shelters and other like-minded organizations.

Q: How do you decide on what charities to give back to?
A: Our Kids Committee! As mothers we want to teach our children about entrepreneurship and philanthropy. We designed our kids committee for children ages 5-16 who have a love of animals and want to make their voice heard. Throughout the year we accept applications from charities through our website and at the end of the calendar year our kids committee vote on the charities they would like to see a portion of our proceeds go to. The Kids Committee receives monthly newsletters that feature a “Kid Spotlight” and their pet, a fun fact and what is going on with our business that month. We make sure that we have teaching moments in each Newsletter. Our hope is that our Committee Members grow-up to pursue their dreams of entrepreneurship while giving back to the communities they live in. Our Kids Committee is open to any child age 5-16, they can just go to our website to register. We even have a Committee Member that lives in Hong Kong!
Q: You’ve recently announced partnership with Project K-9 Hero; could you tell us something more?
A: We are very excited to partner with such an incredible organization such as Project K-9 Hero. Our father, Tom, is Chairman of Brutus Broth and a Vietnam Veteran. We connected with Jason Johnson, the Founder of Project K-9 Hero, through one of our father’s Veteran friends. Project K-9 Hero provides assistance, such as food and medical costs to retired military and police dogs. Often times our retired K-9 Heroes are left with extensive medical costs due to the conditions they worked in for years. Jason founded his organization to give back to those that have given us so much. At Brutus Broth we saw that a collaboration with Project K-9 Hero could be multi-faceted. First, we can provide Project K-9 Hero retired dogs with Brutus Bone Broth as part of their diets. Our broth can benefit all dogs, but especially working and retired K-9 dogs because it acts as a recovery drink full of nutrients and minerals after a strenuous training exercise. Second, we can raise awareness through our customers about the important work Project K-9 Hero is doing for our retired K-9’s. Lastly, we can provide funds for this important cause. In the month of November we will be donating a portion of our sales to Project K-9 Hero in honor of Veterans Day.
Q: What are the benefits of Bone Broth? Why would you recommend it?
A: I would recommend Bone Broth for everyone, not just dogs! I am sure you have seen bone broth now widely available for humans. Now Brutus Broth is making it available for dogs. Bone Broth is packed with nutrients, minerals and amino acids making it a nutritional powerhouse for humans and dogs. It is a phenomenal immune system booster and has healing properties that have been known to soothe digestive issues, help dogs with allergies and food sensitivities and naturally supports joint health. Bone Broth is also known to contain large amounts of the amino acid glycine which helps detoxify the liver, the main organ that removes toxins from the dog’s system. Many people don’t know this but if your dog lies on a carpet that has been treated with a toxic stain resister, stepped on grass with pesticides or has been treated with flea and tick medicine containing chemicals they have toxins in their system! Bone Broth also helps to heal the gut. Stress, poor diet and bacterial overgrowth can result in Leaky Gut Syndrome which can cause undigested food, toxins and yeast to pass through to the body wreaking havoc on the dog’s system. Q: Is it different from regular broth? How do you serve it?
A: We get this question all the time. Can’t I just buy Bone Broth marketed to humans and give it to my dog? The short answer is, I wouldn’t recommend it when you can feed them Brutus Broth. Our Bone Broth is specifically formulated for your pet with pet safe ingredients. We use only the purest, human-grade ingredients and fortify it with glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric. It is manufactured in the USA in a USDA human-grade facility. We make it for dogs but people can drink it to…trust us, Kim and I have tasted it many times! There are many ways to serve our Bone Broth but the most popular ways are to pour it over your dog’s kibble, serve on it’s own for a nutritious drink or freeze in ice cube trays for a fun treat. You can gently warm our bone broth to warm up your dog’s bones on a chilly day!
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: We just launched in May of this year in 160 retail stores in the Northeast to test the market. After a tremendously positive response from our customers we are expanding into other retail stores, as well as, online. We plan to expand our Bone Broth line with more flavors and sizes. We have had many requests for a “Small Breed” or “Puppy” line.
Currently we are in the R&D phase for bone broth treats. We hope to have our treats hit the market in early 2019. We have also gotten many requests for a feline line which is something we will explore in the future.
