Correcto Secures $7M For Its Language Writing Tool

Listen to this article

The rise of generative AI has significantly impacted the trajectory of Correcto, a startup that specializes in a language writing tool tailored for Spanish speakers. Recently, the company announced its successful acquisition of $7 million in seed funding. This funding round witnessed significant contributions from Octopus Ventures, a London-based firm, along with Carya Venture Partners and River Park Ventures.

Origins of Correcto

The inception of Correcto can be traced back to 2021, even before generative AI tools like ChatGPT gained widespread recognition. The Co-Founders, Abraham López Lee (CEO) and Ignacio Prieto Mayorga (COO), recognized the potential of tools like Grammarly in enhancing the quality of written English. However, they were surprised by the lack of similar tools for Spanish, prompting them to develop a solution. Along with Antonio Triguero Noriega, the CTO, they embarked on creating an MVP for Correcto.

Correcto’s Unique Approach

Initially, Correcto utilized rules-based natural language processing combined with a proprietary database of Spanish phrases. This allowed for Grammarly-like auto-editing features that corrected grammar and style in Spanish. The company launched a Chrome extension to gauge demand and later introduced a freemium web app. To date, the app has garnered 120,000 downloads with 70,000 active users.

Despite the growing competition in the AI writing tools sector, Correcto remains optimistic. The founders believe that while LLMs can produce Spanish text, the quality often resembles child-like writing, which is not suitable for professional use. Correcto aims to provide “augmented intelligence” rather than just artificial intelligence, ensuring the human user remains actively involved.

Future Prospects for Correcto

Correcto’s vision extends beyond just grammar correction. They aim to bridge generative AI with cultural connection, especially for millions of users in Latin America. The startup sees a vast potential market, given that there are more native Spanish speakers than English speakers globally. With the new funding, Correcto plans to invest in AI and product development, focusing on nuances in various Spanish dialects.

Andrés Pérez Soderi, a general partner at Carya Venture Partners, expressed his excitement about Correcto’s mission and the potential it holds for users in Latin America.
