Below is our recent interview with Dan Quinn, VP, Sales and Marketing at PTFS:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to PTFS?

A: PTFS is a small business founded in 1995 and headquartered in Rockville Maryland. PTFS has approximately 100 employees and about 85% of our work is with the Federal government. PTFS provides Enterprise Content Services Platforms and professional support services to support both Civil Government agencies and all branches of the Department of Defense.

Q: What types of products do you offer to your clients?

A: PTFS markets both products and services as follows:

• Knowvation is our flagship product and is considered a content services platform (CSP). It is used to store and manage unstructured content for search, discovery and dissemination. This application is used by a diverse set of organizations with large volumes of diverse file formats that must be efficiently searched and analyzed routinely. The CSP serves as a platform to allow accurate analytics to be developed, provides easy integration with toolsets and supports Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning activities.
• Bibliovation is considered a library services platform (LSP) that manages physical content: assets that will never become digital like books, maps and journals and supports the workflow requirements of a physical library. Bibliovation also provides all functions provided by Knowvation. This application is routinely used in libraries, research centers, museums and archives.
• PTFS operates a digitization service center. PTFS can convert any kind of hardcopy media into digital content: paper, microfilm, microfiche, audio, video and other legacy media types.
• PTFS is a system integrator and builds large content management systems with or without our application. One example is the govinfo system built for the government Publishing Office. It is a Big Data repository that houses all Federal publications dating back to the birth of our country.. It is public facing and has received several accolades for being a best practice content management system. You can see it in action here.

Q: What makes you a leading provider of enterprise content management solutions?

A: Knowvation has a unique set of capabilities that ultimately make search and discovery more efficient and employees more productive:

• Knowvation has very strong search functionality: full text (several variations), geospatial, and metadata, and any combination of these search techniques.
• It can be used to store and manage content or alternatively to index content in situ: SharePoint, shared drives, Google Drives and other legacy applications. This functionality enables searching all of the enterprise’s content from one interface.
• The application is open architected which facilitates bolting on applications to meet a wide variety of organizational requirements.
• The application has very strong geospatial capabilities and has been certified for proper handling of a wide variety of imagery file formats.
• Knowvation has been integrated with jBPM workflow, and redaction capabilities are built in for processing and sanitizing files.

Q: Who are your clients and what are some of the key challenges you’re helping them solve?

A: PTFS has a diverse client base including Federal agencies, both DoD and Federal Civilian agencies (Census Bureau, State Department, Office of the Secretary of Defense and others), and State agencies (Utah Department of Transportation, Utah Department of Corrections, Wyoming State Library and others). PTFS also hosts Bibliovation in the Amazon cloud for over 300 SLED organizations.

The key challenge and common theme for our customers is making their employees more productive and to provide a platform for analytical activities. The goal is to spend less time finding data and more time studying the results of analysis or performing other functions that require discovery and normalization of the exact data needed from Big Data repositories and Data Lakes.

Q: What are the company’s plans and goals for the future?

A: PTFS has comprehensive roadmaps for Knowvation and Bibliovation based on customer feedback and PTFS R&D. PTFS plans to continuously enhance our LSP and CSP platforms to maintain their position as best in class applications. PTFS also plans to continue to formulate additional partnerships with strategic companies that provide analytics tools and offer Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning solutions that can be rapidly integrated to solve customer mission requirements. PTFS also plans to continue growing the digitization business by maintaining state of the art equipment/processes and delivering the highest quality digital objects possible.
