Below is our recent interview with Ben Kelly, Co-Founder of Algarithm:
Q: Your second annual music & tech fest is right around the corner – what do you expect from it?
A: We are excited to bring together another event where we mix science and music to provide everyone with a unique experience. We are looking to bring together approximately 1000 people representing a mix of science and technology students and industry representatives. The goal of the event is just to give everyone a chance to relax and have a good time, while also networking and taking in a great entertainment experience!
Q: Tell us more about the program? Who can we expect when it comes to speakers?
A: We will have two technical panels:
1) Food & Biotech – Plant based formulation, the trend toward vegan?
The Food & Biotech panel discuss from field to finished product and the challenges of creating plant based / vegan formulations, what ingredients are important in a plant based formulation and whether or not the overall trend is actually vegan or perhaps more flexitarian / reducitarian oriented,
2) CBD – Cannabis / Hemp, Cannabis processing for CBD and THC, regulation and formulation
The CBD panel will have experts in extraction and purification of CBD & THC, discuss the challenges of masking / dispersing bitter full spectrum CBD extracts, and where the regulatory environment might go.
Following the two technical panels, 5 punk rock bands will take the stage and provide entertainment for the rest of the evening!

Q: The Nuriv 2019 Expo West Music Festival is the place where nutrition science, technology and music collide, right? So what do you get when you mix all those fields?
A: You get people walking away from an experience they won’t forget. Trade shows can be lengthy, tiring, transactional events where connecting with people in a meaningful way can be difficult. Nuriv 2019 Music & Tech Fest creates an experience more like one you would have with a friend on a weekend, allowing you to take in something informative and enjoy a concert at the same time!
Q: I also read something about your new specialist division devoted solely to CBD formulations. What made you go this way?
A: We took a step back and looked at what would be the best way to drive Virun into the new industry that will develop with cannabis / hemp regulation changes and felt that working with other partners to bring all of the skill sets we would need under one division would create the best chance for success.

Q: What are your plans for the future? CBD seems to have great potential?
A: Philip has a bigger vision of combining a range of experiences with the products they manufacturer. Eventually Virun will expand into a bigger footprint building and may even have retail locations that allow consumers to come in and purchase products from us directly.
CBD certainly has some great potential, but so did / do turmeric, CoQ10, omega 3’s. Our view is that CBD is the next “hot” dietary supplement ingredient and there will be lots of opportunity but eventually the trend will die down as the science becomes more defined and consumers latch onto the next big ingredient.
