Q: Megan, how did the idea behind Rover.com come about?
A: The idea for Rover grew out of a negative experience co-founder Greg Gottesman had with his dog at a traditional kennel. He was on vacation when his dog, Ruby Tuesday, was injured at a high-end boarder in Seattle. When his 9-year-old daughter said she would have paid to take care of someone else’s dog, Gottesman saw a business. Gottesman and his team pitched the idea at the 2011 Startup Weekend in Seattle and won top prize.
Q: Can you explain the concept of Rover.com to us, how does it work?
A: Pet parents can discover, book, and manage personalized care for their dogs, including in-home dog boarding, pet sitting, dog walking, in-home dog boarding, and doggy day care. The platform offers premium insurance for all services booked through Rover, secure online payments, world-class customer support, vet consultations, a 24/7 team of trust and safety experts, mobile apps, detailed Rover Cards, photo and video sharing, and general background checks for sitters and dog walkers.

Q: What makes Rover.com unique in the market?
A: Rover manually reviews every profile, and 100% of new sitters and dog walkers complete a general background check and a safety quiz. Sitters and dog walkers get access to the tools, support, and education they need to offer outstanding, individualized care. Pet owners receive detailed Rover Cards verifying each dog walk, drop-in visit, and day care stay—delivered straight from their dog walker or sitter’s phone. In addition, every stay and walk is backed by 24/7 support and premium insurance.

Q: You’ve recently announced a $40 Million Series E funding round; what are your plans?
A: We believe we’re just scratching the surface of potential here and will use funding to accelerate growth. We’re on track to triple revenue this year and triple again next year, and are looking at potential M&A activities and geographic expansion.
