Below is our recent interview with Dennis O’Leary, Chief Business Development Officer at Industrial Magnetics:

Q: For those who haven’t heard of it, what is the best way to describe Industrial Magnetics?

A: We care- it’s that simple. We care about meeting our promises. We care about meeting our quality specifications. We care about getting the product to our customer as promised. We care about meeting all the fit, form and functionality requirements we promised when we proposed a solution and were fortunate enough to receive a valued order. Like we’ve been doing for 58 years, the goal is simple: know the customer and the application, manufacture the best solution and deliver it as promised.

Over the years, we’ve never stopped looking for ways to provide value-added solutions to our customers’ business. We continue to look for cost-effective and new ways to design, engineer and manufacture products to meet specific requirements. Our entire staff is dedicated to manufacturing orders to the highest standards by utilizing quality materials, in conjunction with state-of-the-art equipment and assembly practices. We’re fortunate to have a highly dedicated group of employees, with more than half of our 85 employees having been with IMI for 10+ years and our average is 14.5 years of service – comprising over 1,300 years of service to IMI. This consistency is the backbone of our organization.

We are a privately held entity and we enjoy ourselves at work. We serve over 40 industries, so instead of “the daily grind” it’s a very dynamic environment with multiple opportunities every day to be successful in satisfying a diverse range of customer needs.

Q: You’ve recently acquired Clamp Manufacturing Co.; could you tell us something more?

A: Clamp Manufacturing Co. was founded as a family-owned business in 1973. The unique, Made in The USA Kant-Twist® Clamps and No-Mar® Hammer lines of products have long been recognized for their quality, durability and dependability.

Q: How important is this acquisition for the company?

A: The acquisition of Clamp Manufacturing Co. marks IMI’s next step in expanding our workholding and general manufacturing product offerings. Clamp Manufacturing’s footprint, reputation and well-established relationships provide a unique avenue for us to grow Clamp’s Kant-Twist® and No-Mar® brands, as well as IMI’s current offerings.

This acquisition allows us the opportunity to add onto Clamp Manufacturing’s legacy. With an eye towards expanded SKU’s and a concentration on speed-to-market, we will be proactive in providing a larger and more diverse product offering to meet the expectations of our channel partners and end-users alike.

Q: What type of customer would benefit the most from your products and services?

A: Specific to the Clamp Manufacturing Co. acquisition- a diverse range of industries from metalworking, fabrication, welding, assembly to general manufacturing applications have benefitted from the products’ workhorse-like reliability for over 45 years.

Q: What’s so special about Kant-Twist® Cantilever Clamps? What are the advantages over standard C-Clamps?

A: Kant-Twist® Cantilever Clamps offer several advantages over standard C-Clamps – they’re lighter, stronger and won’t walk-off-center. They are perfect for spot welding, drilling, bolting – or anywhere you need to hold two pieces firmly together.

The Kant-Twist’s innovative cantilever design eliminates the problematic distorting and twisting of work pieces and provides a strong 4:1 clamp ratio. The free-floating jaws easily adjust to uneven surfaces while offering three different gripping faces to meet application needs: knurled, smooth and V-slot for holding round stock.

For welding applications, we offer a Kant-Twist model with copper-plated jaws, screw and handle to prevent weld spatter from sticking. If you need precise control over the holding pressure on your material, choose the Round Handle model for fine tuning capability. The Deep Reach Throat model gives you farther reach onto your material for better holding, and the Stainless Steel model is ideal for clamping material in corrosive or sanitary environments, or for use in magnetic applications.

Non-marring clamps have soft round pads for holding soft materials like wood, plastic, synthetics, aluminum or fine finish/polished metals. And there is no turning, twisting or digging into surfaces like screw-type or C clamps.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: Continued, sustainable growth- both organically and via acquisitions. I believe you grow to the size of your fishbowl, and we doubled the manufacturing floor space at HQ in Boyne City, MI. We are always looking for acquisitions we can fold into our plant and we have completed two such deals in the past 14 months. Strengthening our workforce and growing our footprint into a wide array of market spaces helps to mitigate our downside when the economy suffers, since we are less reliant on a single or small handful of industries. So, we look to diversify by absorption: find the right company with the right value system and bring them into the Industrial Magnetics, Inc. fold.

People- human capital- makes a company; the products are often a “by-product” of the people who make them. We have a deep-rooted belief that if we put the energy we have for magnets into designing something else- it would surely be something we would be proud to sell. That thinking guides our future vision of balancing our core business with meaningful add-ons.
