An Interview With Dr. Hunter Finn – An Up And Coming Veterinary Influencer Based In Arlington, Texas

Listen to this article

Dr. Hunter Finn is an up and coming veterinary influencer based in Arlington, Texas, who is being said to be on his way to becoming the “Dr Oz of animal medicine.” One thing that Dr. Finn wants to get across to audiences is the importance of preventative care for themselves and their pets. This includes a healthy diet as well as preventative care.

No stranger to a challenge, Finn initially did not get accepted to any veterinarian schools he applied for, at least not the first time. After facing rejection from numerous schools, including his dream school, Louisiana State University, Finn took a step back and assessed what he needed to do to succeed. That meant that he would need to retake the entrance exam, as well as some courses to boost his GPA, in addition to reapplying the next year.

“One year later, I applied only to LSU and was accepted into the class of 2019. The roller coaster called veterinary school over the next 4 years was full of excitement, fear, heartbreak, and triumph,” Dr. Finn said.

However, for Finn the trials were not complete. While in the clinical portion of his veterinary program, a malignant melanoma was found on his back. Finn had to have surgery on his back to have the melanoma removed as well as some other lymph nodes that could have been a future problem. In order to help him bounce back into the very fast, intense class load, Finn hired a nutritionist. It was here when he truly discovered the benefits of nutritious eating first hand, and why he is so inspired to get the importance of it through to audiences around the world.

Another issue Finn says is facing pet owners, is the cost of pet ownership. Many people underestimate the cost of owning a pet. They usually only consider the price of the pet. Some owners also factor the price of food, but most think little to nothing after that. One way to make sure that finances never stop you from getting your pet taken care of is to invest in pet health insurance. This is something that Finn highly recommends to his clients. As a vet, one of the most frustrating things for him to see is an animal with a treatable condition that ends with the pet living a pain filled life or being euthanized, simply because the owner cannot afford it. Pet insurance is a great way to avoid that, and with as many companies as there are, Dr. Finn suggests there is a plan out there for everyone.

Finn provides another tip to help pets live a longer lives, and that is to speak with your veterinarian about what diet is best for everyone’s particular pet. Not one diet is sufficient for all humans and the same can be said for animals. What they eat plays a bigger role in their overall health than many pet owners realize.

“I truly believe that there is not a single diet out there that fits every animal’s needs and this is why you should have a discussion with your veterinarian about what diet will best allow your pet to not only survive but thrive,” he said.

Dr. Hunter Finn’s story is the embodiment of what a professional should aspire to be. His passion runs so deep, that he put in an entire extra year of work just to get accepted into the veterinary program he dreamed of being a part of, to help the most animals possible. For him, there was no plan B, there was only his goal to become a practicing veterinarian, and graduate from his school. He let nothing stop him on his path to success, not even a tumor.
