An Interview With TJ Holowaychuk, The Founder At Apex Logs

Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with TJ Holowaychuk, the Founder at Apex Logs:

Q: What are you developing? Why is important?

A: I’m working on Apex Logs, a structured and plain-text log management solution. I believe it’s important because it’s one of the only offerings that is not from a VC-backed startup, and because of this I have less pressure to make many millions in revenue, so I can charge a much more reasonable price than any of my competitors.

Q: What is your startup story?

A: I was working in the industry for large startups such as Segment.com, but I wanted a change of pace and more control over what I was working on.

I enjoy design and user-experience, as well as working on infrastructure, so building my own products felt like a natural next step. Overall I try to create products which I would enjoy using, and hope that others do as well!

Q: Who would be your ideal user and why?

A: For Apex Logs I think my ideal customer is any business looking to dramatically reduce their logging bill, as I’m offering industry-leading pricing at $0.4/GB it’s hard to find a better deal at the moment.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your product?

A: Apex Logs is different than most SaaS log management solutions such as Loggly, Papertrail, or LogDNA, all of which are multi-tenant solutions, if it goes down for one, it typically goes down for all. Apex Logs is a self-hosted alternative.

Apex Logs is installed to your private Google Cloud account and utilizes their serverless offerings to give you a mainenance-free logging solution with your own private API. Essentially it’s like having your own private Loggly or Papertrail instance, you can still send logs from any platform such as AWS, Digital Ocean, Heroku or any others, but the data lives in your Google Cloud account.

For example there’s an AWS CloudWatch Logs integration which ingests your AWS logs, providing you with a much faster and centralized replacement for CloudWatch, which is typically painfully slow.

Q: What are your plans?

A: I plan to continue with aggressive pricing to help make a dent in the industry, and of course continuing to develop Apex Logs into the most user-friendly and flexible product that I can.

I’ll be adding features like scheduled email and Slack reports to help keep your team members informed, as well as charting and dashboards.
