Q: Tell us exactly how CBD works. What is the science behind it?
A: CBD is one of the most studied cannabinoids of the 116+ found in the hemp plant, making up about 40% of the plant. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive; meaning you will not experience mind-altering effects (or a ‘high’).
Rather, CBD works in conjunction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for managing homeostasis – the body’s ability to regulate and stabilize itself from the outside environment. This includes your body’s temperature, blood sugar levels, pain sensation, sleeping, inflammation responses, CO2 levels, and more; which all need to remain within certain parameters to ensure optimal health.
When you introduce CBD to your body, it links with CB1 and CB2, two main cannabinoid receptors. Together, they work synergistically to interact with the ECS to help regulate your body’s homeostasis.
CBD works to mimic the look and functions of cells found in your body – promoting recovery and/or positive effects. Having a similar composition to the cells in your body, CBD allows for an integrated interaction or activation with receptor cells like vanilloid, serotonin, and adenosine receptors. CBD can also inhibit the function of CB1 cells – not by activating them, but by blocking them. This means that other cells cannot interact with the CB1 receptor cells while CBD is in the body.
Although CBD works in a similar fashion to common medications, CBD is extracted naturally from plants, instead of produced synthetically in a lab.
Q: Can you walk us through your extraction process? Does this make a difference to the end-product?
A: Yes! There are many extraction methods common within the industry. cbdMD uses a “hybrid broad-spectrum extraction process,” allowing us to preserve and extract the valuable terpenes and beneficial compounds produced by the plant.
Like I mentioned above, all of our batches of CBD undergo rigorous testing throughout the entire extraction and purification process.

Q: What are the benefits for the human body?
A: The interaction with receptor cells, mentioned earlier, gives CBD the ability to promote beneficial effects on the human body.
For example, the vanilloid receptors regulate both pain and inflammation. When activated, these receptors help you experience less pain and inflammation. CBD has demonstrated the ability to promote both.

It has also been shown to keep your nervous system strong and healthy, as well as help you sleep. CBD can aid in bone growth and increasing your appetite.
