Meet Consultgenix – A Company That Helps Small And Mid-Size Businesses Become Profitable

Listen to this article

Below is our recent interview with Derrek Space, CEO of Consultgenix:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Consultgenix?

A: I started Consultgenix in 2018, as a project that has interested me for a long time, and that was to consult and coach, small to medium-sized businesses (“SMB”) in the USA and Canada. What I found was that the SMB’s, especially the owners, were subject matter experts in their traits, and what they sold, but they were so focused on their products, they lost sight of the financials, operations, business development and administration. What we focus on are ensuring that all the aspects of the business are aligned, and as such, will drive to better profitability and ultimately, financial freedom. In short, “Consultgenix helps small and mid-size businesses become profitable. Get data-driven insights and proven processes to help your business grow and scale. Learn what’s really driving your business and find financial freedom for your business and yourself. We will teach you the pillars of success, the ‘how to,’ the ‘why,’ and the ability to thrive in today’s uncertain landscape.”

Q: Derrek, can you tell us something more about yourself?

A: I was born in Dallas, Texas, and moved to Coral Gables, Florida, when I was eight. I grew up in the Miami area, went to high school here and matriculated from the University of Florida. After graduation, I was lucky enough to land a job at Lehman Brothers, in NYC. Coincidentally enough, my first day of work was September 11, 2001, at 3 World Financial Center, connected to 1 World Trade Center. Walking through 1WTC that morning is incredibly eerie, looking back at everything that happened, and one day we will never forget. After Lehman Brothers, I worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers, PepsiCo, AIG, and Aetna, just to name a few. Currently live in South Florida with my wife, Soledad, my two children, Sophie and Matthew, and Lulu, our [pug] dog. Love to read, play sports, and work on the business.

Q: What were you doing before Consultgenix?

A: I was in the corporate world, always within finance, business development and sales. I was lucky enough to work for some of the largest, and well-known companies in the world. I learned so much, and am totally humbled to have been associated with those companies. My parents always instilled in me a strong work ethic, and during my college summers, had the opportunity to work with Smith Barney, Arthur Anderson (now Accenture), and Dean Witter.

Q: Who are your clients? What types of services do you provide them with?

A: My clients range in sizes, though, the ideal client is smaller in nature, under $50M in annual sales, with a primary focus on clients even smaller than that (ranging from under $1M to about $5M), and the reason being is that for them, cash is king, and it’s easy to lose sight of it when you’re trying to grow your brand. Consultgenix is a consulting, and digital (and social) marketing agency. Our services range from financial due diligence, to understanding your marketing analytics, to operations, to sales and identifying what are driving your numbers. While not the size of the larger scale consulting agencies, we have grown quite a bit over the last few years, and I absolutely LOVE helping companies grow, flourish and for the owners to find the financial peace and freedom that they deserve!

Q: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your business and how did you overcome it?

A: At first, it’s having a healthy pipeline of clients, as all start-ups, smaller companies, and even larger companies, are aware of. Once we have developed that pipeline, the next obstacle is ensuring that we are not over-committing and under-delivering. That is a huge issue that I never want to fall prey to. For me, and for my team, we want to make sure we are giving 110%, exceeding our clients’ expectations, and raising the bar! We will always face challenges, and the goal will always be to understand the challenges, and find ways to turn them into a strength, and learn from them. An issue we face, is that if you do not challenge the status-quo, you will never be able to excel, making it better through efficiencies, and/or learn from it. Having the curiosity to learn, adapt and educate yourself, is paramount in self-development. And just as important, it takes almost 20 years to create a reputation, and only five minutes to destroy it. ALWAYS, and I mean always, strive for excellence and educate yourself.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: I love what I do, and honestly feel, that I will find myself doing this until I can no longer function and give 110% to whatever I am doing. That said, with a family at home, striking that level of work-life balance is very challenging. I would love to be there for the important parts of my kids’ lives, watch them grow, and honestly, that is something I have not done very well. I need to work on that and find ways where I can be there for them, while still doing what I love with Consultgenix. Sure, I’d like to grow this business and help thousands of clients and watch them not only grow, but see them succeed in their demanding markets, but also watch them find the stability, and freedom, that they deserve. So, with that said, I am not going anywhere, and will continue to strive for excellence and help the SMB’s get there!
