Kilter is a full-service design and branding studio based in Southern California. They specialize in building strong brand narratives, launch strategies, and conversion campaigns. Below is our recent interview with Jess First, Co-Founder, and Chief Strategist at Kilter:

Q: Jess, can you tell us what is your expertise?

A: We are experts in distilling complex issues and engaging audiences across a variety of touchpoints. We benefit from seasoned leadership and a strong creative team with diverse skill sets including: in-house strategists, designers, writers, conceptors, typesetters, illustrators, editors, animators, and illustrators.

Q: What is your backstory? How did your company come into being?

A: The three partners met about 5 years ago, and after working a few projects together felt that there was an opportunity to create and agency that leveraged branding and smart communication work to benefit smaller organizations. We work with small business’, non-profits, and municipalities. Though this work we help them to tell their story and build community and impact change. So, from there we opened our studio in Pasadena, CA. And one by one started to recruit talent that was passionate about the same issues.

Q: Can you give us insights into some of your work samples?

A: We take pride in developing bespoke solutions for each of our clients. This has included uniting the LA education community to attend City of Stem launch events, where we increased attendance by 7X, to rebranding 100 year old educational institutes to make sure that they were perceived not only as established but resonate with today’s families.

Q: What types of services do you provide to your clients?

A: Our expertise is in branding and campaigns. However, we help our clients to build their brand through all touch points, which includes annual reports, content creation, email campaigns, social media customer acquisition, and more. We are unique in that we take a bit of time at the start of every project to not only define the objective but to conduct primary and secondary research so that we can deliver the best impact possible.

Q: What are some of the main objectives for Kilter in 2020?

A: Right now we are working to help our clients manage this difficult time through planning, brand building and crisis communication. Our objective is to be able to help everyone we work with manage their brand during this time, and set them up for success for the remainder of the year. This has included moving a lot of event strategies to a digital solution, and personal video narratives. We pride ourselves on our good problem solving, and innovative solutions and believe that now more than ever those are needed.
