Meet Yomento – A Swedish Startup Aiming To Democratize Leadership Training

Below is our recent interview with Henrik Stahle, Chief Executive Officer at Yomento:

Henrik Stahle

Q: What is Yomento exactly? Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction?

A: Yomento is a leadership training platform empowering the next generation of leaders and organizations to achieve outstanding results.

We help young, ambitious leaders become successful by practicing daily leadership behaviors through a digital Personal Leadership Trainer (PLT) in their phone – creating better leaders and a better world.

We also offer the organization real-time data insights to help them make fact-based strategic decisions.

Q: Are leadership skills really a key to success? Why?

A: Good leadership is indeed key to both team and company success. To be frank, this is quite old news. Decades of research and reports from Harvard, Google, McKinsey, Forbes, and more reach the same conclusion.

For example, we know today that the majority of employee engagement is directly tied to the employee’s manager. When people are engaged and motivated they perform better, and when they perform better the organization shows better results.

So put simply: great leadership leads to happy people, which leads to well-performing organizations.

Q: How do organizations typically develop their managers today?

A: Most initiatives focus on off-site leadership programs, which are great to inspire leaders, help them reflect on how they are leading, and share their experiences with each other. However, this type of training doesn’t always show results back on the job. Frequently leaders don’t have or don’t take the time necessary to implement what they learned. Without practice, most of what they learned is soon forgotten.

We can also see that off-site leadership programs are expensive, which tends to make them exclusive, offered for only a few managers in the organization.

Q: Alright, so off-site leadership training doesn’t always work. What do you suggest instead?

A: We suggest that organizations focus more on developing successful leadership behaviors in the everyday working environment.

Practicing leadership behaviors daily is what makes leaders learn and grow most effectively, and it is what has the greatest positive impact on their colleagues. Unfortunately, daily leadership practice is usually not prioritized.

We also strongly believe that everyone in the organization should have the chance to practice leadership; not only managers, but informal leaders as well. Imagine what would happen to an organization’s engagement and business results if everyone had the opportunity to develop great leadership skills!

To quote Simon Sinek; “Leadership development is like taking care of your teeth. You need to go to the dentist once a year, sure, but you also need to brush your teeth every day.” The off-site leadership program is the dentist, and Yomento is the tooth brush making sure leaders practice every day.

Q: Why is this an important behavior to implement right now?

A: We are experiencing a new era of corporate learning and development, and it is mainly due to three main factors.

One of those is the Millennial generation. By next year, the Millennials will form around 50 percent of the workforce, and 75 percent by 2025. This is key because the “new generation” is actually not so new anymore, and very soon Millennials will be leading all of the world’s major organizations.

Another factor coming into play is the way we learn today. Technology has changed our learning behaviors and we all want to learn on-the-go, here and now, and we demand that it be personalized and mobile.

We also experience a sense of urgency to develop next generation’s leaders. This is now on top of almost any CEO’s priority list since rapid transformations and complex environments require great leadership if the organization is to thrive.

Q: Can you give us more insight into your products? What is the PLT like?

A: The Personal Leadership Trainer (PLT) is a unique mobile app helping leaders practice daily leadership, on-the-job. Together with experienced leadership consultants, managers, psychologists, and insights from the latest research, we have created a unique training format, based on Cognitive Behavioral Theory principles, to help leaders take action and have a positive impact on their colleagues for better results. The training is bite-sized and focused on each individual to help them become successful in their role and context.

Then we have the Leadership Scorecard, the data insights report we provide organizations, to understand what behaviors are driving positive change, what their leaders actually practice, and how they can make fact-based strategic decisions. This is of course on an aggregated level.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: We are on a mission to empower 1 billion people to apply leadership skills at work, to create a better world. That’s why our ultimate ambition is to make this available for anyone in the world. That’s how we can democratize leadership development. We all deserve to become better leaders and better people.

Right now we are raising capital to scale up and grow the team to meet client demands.
