Poort Technologies Manufactures High-Design Enclosures For Major Tablets

Listen to this article

Poort Technologies makes high-design enclosures for major tablets (iPad, Samsung) that allow them to be used as fixed instruments and controllers. Poort’s CEO Dwight Jones has been a network designer since 1986, first for major bulletin boards (BBS), then as a developer of terminal display (fractal compression) and billing utilities. He introduced the Internet to BC’s Gulf Islands and recently designed EMS networks for paramedic and ambulance deployment. From these designs the Poort form factor emerged for integrating kitchens and workplaces into domestic networks.

Below is our interview with Dwight G. Jones, CEO at Poort Technologies Inc.:

Q: Could you explain the function and advantages of your Poort enclosures?

A: A Poort enclosure offers many advantages over conventional wall mount or kiosk stands.

· Conceals the electrical outlet, that always keeps it fully charged
· Hides all cables, can charge cellphones on top, and runs on just 5V/10W
· Occupies no counter space and remains a portable instrument box
· Elegant and secure design allows finger access to all tablet controls
· Fits all generations of 9.7” iPads and Samsung tablets
· Allows iPads to be fixed advanced fixed controllers within the Smart Home

Q: What advantage does Poort have over its competitors?

A: Poorts are a new form factor with no major competitors beyond iPad stand/kiosk or bracket manufacturers. Poort enclosures leverage the 200 million+ “installed base” of iPads and bring their 1 million apps with them. Together with the Apple HomePod Siri speaker, iPad Poorts operating within Apple HomeKit will form an unbeatable partnership in home automation.

As a design firm, Poort is introducing a hardware combination (iPad Poort, HomePod) that:

· Remains independent of consumer ecosystems that funnel users toward commercial marketplaces using walled-garden networks
· Fixes the iPad into its rightful place in home automation – as its center controller and most versatile legacy tablet
· Leveraging the best-of-breed combination of an iPad/HomePod partnership for pre-eminent engineering

Q: What geographic markets are you focusing on currently?

A: Poort products are currently distributed via Amazon in North America, and in 2018 within Amazon Europe. Thereafter distribution in Asia. Manufacturing remains in Vancouver.
