Redpoint Delivers An Indoor Real-Time Location System (RTLS) Platform That Offers High Accuracy, Scalability And Low Cost

Listen to this article

Redpoint Positioning Corp was founded in 2011 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Dr. Chunjie Duan, who is currently the CTO of the company. Dr. Duan was an award-winning research scientist who spent 10 years on indoor location and wireless communication technologies. He also worked for several international telecom companies, including Alcatel, Qualcomm and Ericsson.

Below is ou interview with Alex Tidwell, from Redpoint Positioning Corp:

Q: Alex, you’ve recently announced the establishment of a new branch in Beijing, China; could you tell us something more?

A: We’re very excited to open an office in Beijing. Redpoint has had strong ties to China from its inception, and now we will be able to grow and better support our Chinese customer base. The Beijing office will be managing the production of all Redpoint hardware products, developing products specifically for the Chinese market, as well as providing direct support to our customers in the Asia/Pacific region.

Q: Please tell us a little about the technology that drives your platform?

A: Redpoint has developed an indoor Real-Time Location System (RTLS) platform that offers high accuracy, scalability and low cost. The platform is built using Ultra Wideband (UWB), a radio frequency technology, and it operates very similarly to a GPS system. A network of radio devices (anchors) ‘talk’ to each other to form a mesh network. This wireless infrastructure network provides location and data communication services to mobile radio devices (tags). The tags are able to determine their locations, and send and receive data simultaneously. Using Redpoint or third-party software applications, users are able to view the activity within the coverage area.

Q: What kind of products do you offer to your customers?

A: We provide a complete suite of hardware and software. Our hardware products include ‘anchors,’ the radio nodes that make up a real-time location system’s infrastructure, and ‘tags’ to attach to objects and people to track their activity. We offer several different kinds of tags, depending on what you would like to do with them. To track workers, for example, we offer a badge tag that has the capability of two-way communication to send messages and alarms to and from the server.

Our software products include a web portal, where users can see real-time activity in two dimensions, view playback and heatmaps, set up no-go safety zones, and pull reports to analyze all their data stored on the cloud server. Additionally, our friendly and knowledgeable solutions engineers can visit your site and set up your RTLS solution. We also offer support via email and phone.

We also sell the module separately. This module can be used to integrate our technology with your own hardware, sensors or real-time location system setup.

Q: What can we expect from Redpoint in the future?

A: Redpoint is currently working with a number of industrial partners to develop end-to-end solutions for various applications. Many of our partners will start rolling out their RTLS-enabled products in 2018.

Redpoint will focus on developing fundamental location technologies to make our platform more robust, with better performance, but also simpler and more user-friendly. Our next generation platform will be released in the third quarter of 2018. Many new features in the next gen platform will allow our partners to build RTLS applications more easily.
