Startup Cuseum – Transforms The Way We Interact With Art

Listen to this article

Boston based startup Cuseum has raised a total of $2.67 Million from investors to date, to bring mobile app platform to the museum, art and cultural world. Cuseum’s vision is to transform the way people interact with art using mobile technology. Here is our recent interview with Brendan Ciecko, Founder and CEO of Cuseum:

Brendan Ciecko - CuseumQ: What is Cuseum? Could you tell us Cuseum’s startup story?

A: Cuseum uses mobile technology to enhance the way people interact with art, at museums, galleries, and anywhere you’d find art. For all of my life, I’ve been drawn to art and technology. I started outlining a concept to build a platform for museums to power mobile apps without all of the frustrations. When Apple announced iBeacon, I knew it was time to pursue this idea. Before our first line of code or mock-up, I spent lots of time meeting with people from the museum community to get a fuller understanding of their wants and needs. There was a clear frustration with the current solutions – inefficient, expensive, and lacking many desired elements. I saw this as a great opportunity to jump in and build something to help museums and visitors connect.

Q: Cuseum-powered apps embrace beacon technology and social features, could you tell us something more about the technology behind your apps?

A: Cuseum powered mobile apps serve as the visitors’ passport to museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions. As you enter the museum, you can pick an exhibition, tour, highlights, or find your own path. When you enter a gallery or walk-up to a work of art, content is pulled up based on your proximity. In addition to diving deeper into the content, we want to empower visitors to share their thoughts, and broadcast their favorites over social media. We want visitor’s time at the museum to be engaging and personalized. We’re energized about the limitless potential of bringing a great mobile experience to museums and the art world.

Q: What is your experience with Start Tank?

A: Being at the PayPal Start Tank has been a spectacular experience. The resources, support, and network we are surrounded by have been invaluable to us. The co-founder of the Start Tank, David Chang, has been super helpful to me and Cuseum – he’s a huge asset to the Boston startup ecosystem!

Q: What are your plans?

A: We’re concentrating our energy on building the technology platform that the museum world craves. At the present time we’re rolling out new features, growing our team, and launching our technology at more museums. We want to be your universal passport to the art world and look forward to making this vision a reality.
