Below is our recent interview with Pasi Hurri, CEO at BaseN:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to BaseN?
A: BaseN, established in 2001, has a proven track record of being the engine for managing millions of data points from countless sources. The core features of BaseN’s global full stack IoT platform are scalability, fault tolerance and its inherently distributed architecture. Currently BaseN Platform processes over one million spime transactions per second. Spimes store every piece of code together with all collected data from and around physical objects in the Internet of Things, enabling the creation of intelligent services around products.
Q: Tell us about the early days of BaseN. What were the biggest challenges?
A: Since the company was founded without any external funding, we had to be extremely frugal on any investments or costs. Also, finding prime quality staff was a challenge. However, the frugal approach turned out to be one of the main strengths, as we are now independent from any third-party influencers.

Q: What makes your platform the perfect base for evolving AI applications?

Q: How hard is it to be energy efficient and self-sufficient?
A: The biggest issue with energy efficiency is that we have been wasteful for the last 200 years and there have been minimal measurements of any energy consumption. Many times, industries considered themselves self-sufficient while they were using non-renewable sources like coal and oil. BaseN sees that instrumenting all phases of industrial processes is vital for energy efficiency and ultimately self-sufficiency. This is mostly an attitude problem of existing management and even economical education

Q: What does the future hold? Where is the company headed?
A: Most businesses today operate in a fire-and-forget mode. As soon as the product is sold, it becomes a mere liability for the duration of its warranty. While lot of resources are used to enhance production, sourcing and distribution processes, customer and consumer behavior and the product’s afterlife get surprisingly little attention. Yes, there are the registration URLs and earlier the mail-in cards, but they’re usually designed as such nuisances that some one percent or less of customers fill them. Fire-and-forget model is sticky, not least since it has become the norm propagated by countless business books and common practices since the industrial revolution. It is coming to an end, though. Spimes will start a new era. Connectivity and sensing technologies are quickly becoming affordable even for the cheapest products, such as roof tiles and lunchboxes. Suddenly the tile manufacturer is aware of the status and usage of every single tile she has sold – providing her with several new ways to interact with and sell more to the customer. Spimes will eventually become the primary merchandise, around which physical goods come and go. Many products, if not all, become services in which the customer relationship may last a lifetime or longer, provided that the vendor remains competitive. It’ll be all about the moment the customer gets an idea to purchase something more – the odds are not even, the spime holder will always have an advantage, unlike in the current vendor selection tradition.
