Q: For those who haven’t heard of it, what is the best way to describe BaseN?
A: BaseN is a global full-stack provider for digital twins of virtually any product or service. We collect, analyze and present massive amounts of data with intelligent algorithms and present it to different audiences in a multitude of different industries.
Q: What makes you unique is that you are a full stack IoT Operator – what exactly does it mean?
A: We have developed own technologies for databases, communication and containers for the past 18 years. Due to our own development we are fully independent of third-party providers. We control the full value chain in order to provide ultimate scalability, fault tolerance and security to our customers.

Q: Why is BaseN the IoT platform of choice for the smart grid?
A: The energy industry needs a different kind of reliability compared to what traditional IT providers are used to. Our modern societies are completely dependent on energy distribution so our customers prefer a highly reliable provider that can guarantee service even in exceptional circumstances. With ruts from military technology this challenging environment is most natural to us. BaseN Platform is designed to be mission-critical while other platform providers struggle with these components of the platform and hence try to move away from these kinds of responsibilities.
Q: What is a Spime and why is it useful?
A: Spime is the digital brain of anything physical. Spime records the full life cycle of a product or service and ultimately becomes the main merchandise when more and more objects are connected with technologies such as 5G. If IoT is the network, spime is the artificial intelligence running on top of it. Think of an autonomous car, where does the logic reside? In the car or in the much more powerful cloud environment?
Q: How did you position yourself as the primary platform for Spimes in the IoT?
A: We decided early on to create a new market because we found existing platforms inadequate and not sustainable enough for our type of customers. In a nutshell we bring IoT to the real world and not and not just to high-flying entertainment businesses. This can easily be seen when looking at our customer Trimble where BaseN Platform is the core platform to enable visibility on building construction projects combining a jobsite access control system with a worker database for increased site security and efficiency. Apart of managing over 100 000 workers and assests, BaseN Platform also handles retail warehouse inventory tracking, with automatic order creation based on thresholds of volume of goods monitored real-time through RFID or bar code tags.

Q: What are the top trends in IoT for 2019?
A: We see the emergence of real business as a top trend because the time for the entertainment devices and semi-fitness things are passing and we are delighted to see how the heavy industry is strongly transforming. The other top trend is very cheap connectivity. Before 5G there are newer and newer technologies that are cheaper and cheaper. Things that were too expensive before, become more affordable which enables new ideas.
