Below is our recent interview with Susan Smith, Marketing Manager from CapsoVision:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to CapsoVision?
A: CapsoVision, Inc. is a Silicon Valley-based medical device innovator and manufacturer of the only capsule endoscopy device with 360-degree field of view. Our flagship product, CapsoCam Plus, provides a comprehensive look at the small intestine without the need for data recorders, making it the only capsule endoscopy system not contraindicated for patients with implantable devices.

Q: You’ve recently announced distribution partnership with PENTAX Canada; could you tell us something more?
A: PENTAX Medical is the CapsoCam Plus distributor in the United States and we recently extended that agreement to cover Canada. PENTAX Medical is one of 35 distributors worldwide selling the CapsoCam Plus product. PENTAX Medical’s significant sales resources in the USA and Canada, is a tremendous opportunity to substantially grow our CapsoCam Plus business.
Q: Can you give us insights into your products?
A: The CapsoCam Plus endoscopy capsule has some very unique features over other capsules currently on the market;
•No wearable data recorders which simplifies workflow for staff and saves much time for patients
•No capital equipment or software cost investment for customers…which allows immediate ROI from the first procedure done
•360-degree panoramic view allows physicians to identify more pathology than with alternative technology which has a tunnel view
•No long-term purchase contracts are required. Physicians/facilities can purchase what they need when they need it
•CapsoView software is a repository where the capsule images are uploaded and converted into the panoramic view videos. Physicians and review the image study and create a report with pathology images directly within the software
Q: What is CapsoCloud? How does it work?
A: CapsoCloud is a secure, HIPPA compliant cloud-based portal that allows a physician to download, read and create reports from capsule studies from anywhere there is internet access. This secure, cloud-based technology is used to access and store files reducing the need to local computer storage.
Use of CapsoCloud is particularly convenient for physicians, staff and patients. When the patient retrieves the capsule, it is put into a prepaid FedEx envelope and mailed to our download center. We do all the cleaning and uploading of the data to the cloud and send the physician an email when the study is ready to view…generally in 3 days of receipt of the capsule. This allows staff to do other things, and the patient doesn’t have to visit the physician office twice to get fitted for recorder and return the recorder at the end of the day.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: CapsoVision has short and long-term projects in the pipeline using our technology platform. We are currently in R&D for a colon capsule. The goal is to provide a less risk, less cost option for colon cancer screening. Currently 60% of colonoscopies done for screening are negative. The goal is to use the capsule for screening, especially for those patients who refuse colonoscopy and/or do not have colon cancer risk factors. Colonoscopy could then be subsequently performed on the 40% of patients where pathology is identified (such as a polyp) and allow therapeutic action such as polyp removal. Colonoscopy when used as a screening test has a much higher risk of infection, perforation, or reactions from sedation. Swallowing a capsule can remove those risks and provide a very effective screening tool. Our unique 360-degree platform has potential use within the entire GI tract.
