We talked with Timothy Webb, VP of Operations, about how their new product, CodeMix, is bridging a gap in the ever changing software landscape.
Q: Can you tell us more about Genuitec and the support it provides?
A: We started out as a company offering tools for enterprise developers in Eclipse, and since then have become an expert in the needs of coders by providing a variety of tools and products. Tracking the evolution in the coding landscape, we continue staying on top of the changes: last year, we rolled out Angular IDE and now we are launching CodeMix.
Q: So how would you define CodeMix in a few words?
A: CodeMix is a technology that allows developers in the enterprise or those who are Eclipse users to take advantage of a wide array of tech support that is available via Code extensions made popular by MS Visual Studio Code. Developers can work in a hybrid environment within their Eclipse IDE in which Visual Studio Code language smarts and Eclipse, Java and Spring tooling coexist. Q: Why did you build on VS Code?
A: One of the challenges for a company providing tooling is the breadth of technologies developers need. VS Code has really changed the landscape for development tools by offering a vibrant web-first development stack. It has redefined the expectation of what an editor can do. For CodeMix, the open-source flavor of VS Code provides a rich foundation to expose all those smarts simply, while allowing for a familiar Eclipse experience.
Q: What advantages does CodeMix bring to a developer?
A: CodeMix brings the best for Eclipse and VS Code users, all in the same product. It gives you, an Eclipse developer, access to the rich catalog of VS Code extensions and advanced development, so there is no longer a need to decide between superb Java tooling or awesome support for dynamic language and web technologies. You now have access to everything from TypeScript and React development aids, to Python and Go language support. CodeMix also offers advanced navigation aids and rich command support, the rapid command action you can run from the keyboard, letting Eclipse developers use automation like Docker support for VS Code.
Q: Who would use CodeMix?
A: Its primary audience is those developers who still need to do Java and Spring yet are looking for something more. When developing web portals, you must go beyond static pages, yet the backend still has the same business logic in Java. CodeMix will allow you, as a Java developer using Eclipse, to develop both your backend and an exciting frontend without having to switch environments or learn a new editor.
Q: How does this help the developer community?
A: CodeMix combines two platforms together: Eclipse has many plug-ins (e.g. Maven, Spring), while VS code has a complementary set of extensions. Thus, it allows a unique synergy between the two communities all in one product.

A: It is now available as a sneak peek – just go to the CodeMix homepage and access it there. Joining our Insiders program will allow you to follow its evolution, by seeing the latest examples in action, and to get access to sneak peek builds. You will be able to use it in Eclipse or other Eclipse-compatible IDE.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: We are very excited because in the near future we will have the first release. CodeMix is different and unusual; it provides a very unique value. However, success will come from users like you by providing your feedback. This is the journey we’re beginning and are looking forward to hearing from you.
