Below is our recent interview with Kelli O’Neil, VP Operations Americas at idrive:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to idrive?
A: idrive started a little over 10 years ago as a dash camera company. We entered the transportation industry with our X-Series vehicle camera system which offered a rugged system with Wi-Fi download at a very cost-effective price. About 5 years ago we launched our AI division with the idea that the industry would be changing and making a huge leap in technology. We started sorting our data and running detailed calculations on billions and billions of driving miles collected throughout the years. Our main goal when analyzing the data was to develop advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) that would help our clients truly change the way their drivers drive.
All of our calculations, designs and engineering are all done in house by our advanced team of mathematicians and engineers.

Q: What’s iris and how does it work?
A: Iris is our online cloud-based platform and the backbone our system. Everything from the X-Series and AI camera systems gets uploaded here: video events, GPS location and driving data. Once data is uploaded to iris safety managers can login in with their secure credentials and view events, track a vehicle, run advances reports, score events, request a live video from a particular vehicle and much more. iris is the main fleet management hub for our clients, where they can truly see exactly what is going on within their fleet.
Q: You’ve recently announced the AI Cam, an all-new intelligent dual-facing camera; could you tell us something more?
A: The AI Cam is an advanced dash camera unlike anything else out on the market. The hardware we built this camera with is extremely powerful and will allow us to continue growing our technology for years to come. The AI Cam includes all the great features of a more traditional dash camera plus the ability to run advanced AI features like distracted & drowsy driving, facial recognition, and seatbelt detection. Normally only available in multiple aftermarket products.
Q: Can you give us insights into your solutions?
A: The AI Cam is designed to reduce fleet accidents. When our solution is actively used, idrive clients see an average of 53% reduction in accidents. The less accidents the better for everyone. Using the iris platform driving events are reviewed, reports are generated giving fleet managers data and video needed to coach their drivers. Idrive has found that coaching and reinforcing good driving behaviors is one of the best ways to prevent an accident.
Not all companies have the time to review each video so idrive has a team of technicians that review and score driving videos. This is done with a combination of artificial intelligence doing the initial review and then idrive techs doing the final review. By adding services to our solution like accident detection, distracted and drowsy detection, facial recognition, safe distance warning, and seatbelt detection idrive can capture and organize the most important safety events.
Throughout the years, when our solution is actively used, we have seen an average of 53% reduction in accidents and we want that number to increase as much as possible. The less accidents the better for everyone. We use the term “actively used” when a client takes the time to review events, generate reports and coach their drivers using the data in order to prevent an accident by changing the driver’s behavior. Clients not “actively” using their system use it to capture an accident get the unbiased facts of what happened and keep on moving. We want to change this, we want everyone actively coaching their drivers. Adding things to our solution like distracted and drowsy detection, facial recognition, seatbelt detection, advanced reports and more give critical data to fleet managers that can’t and should be ignored. Our main goal is to continue digesting as much information as we can so we can get all our clients actively coaching all of their drivers and increase the amount of accident reductions across the board.
Q: What makes you the world’s most intelligent driver monitoring technology?
A: What makes us the world’s most intelligent driver monitoring technology is that idrive has combined a solid dash camera system with some of the most advanced in cab artificial intelligence. Not only does the AI Cam capture events using AI but it can also warn drivers to pay attention to the road, wakeup, and slowdown. Idrive is working to combine every piece of technology a fleet manager could ever want or need to manager their fleet into one small cell phone sized device. Not only are we capturing all this information, but we are sorting through it, analyzing it and presenting it in an easy to read, actionable format. Collecting a bunch of advanced, fancy data doesn’t do anyone any good if no one knows how to use it.

Q: What are some of the main objectives for idrive going into 2020 and how do you plan to achieve them?
A: For 2020 we have a lot of big goals. We are actively promoting our new reseller program that will get more cameras into the hands of customers globally. We have learned over the years that it is very helpful to partner with companies that have feet on the ground within their region and that already have a relationship with the client. We are also hoping to close on some funding opportunities that will allow us to further expand our advanced development team and bring even more AI technology to our clients. Finally, another big goal for 2020 will be the release of some additional AI services that will be added to the AI cam throughout this upcoming year. Each of these releases are currently being tested and details will be announced closer to any release dates.
