Media Network BuiltWorlds Connects Technology, People And Innovation In The Built Industry

Listen to this article

BuiltWorlds is a network and community for the built industry, which includes architecture, engineering, construction, real estate, finance, and the many other sectors that work in tandem on projects, large and small. Their mission is to be the catalyst for progress and innovation in this industry and be the place for the fragmented industry to come together, through events, networking, and media. Below is our interview with Phoebe Noce, Director of Consumer Marketing at BuiltWorlds:

Q: You’ve recently announced the final agenda and speaker lineup for the Buildings 2.0 conference; could you tell us something more?

A: There are a lot of industry, technology, and otherwise forward-thinking events out there. But we rarely — if ever — see all stakeholders under one roof, learning and working together toward the same goal. And that’s always exciting to see at our events. We also like to focus on the technologies and innovation being used and implemented in projects today or in the very near future — not 10 years or more from now. Specifically, we’re honing in on IoT, machine learning, artificial intelligence, parametric design, etc. So that’s something you’ll also see at our Buildings 2.0 conference. Q: What can we expect from Buildings 2.0 conference?

A: We want people to come away from the event with actionable takeaways they can implement in their own projects, whether it’s discovering new ways to use existing building data or how to finance and implement new sensors and new technology. We put a lot of emphasis on networking because we’ve seen significant value in making connections, so attendees can also expect to have met a lot of intriguing, quality people.

Q: What are your plans?

A: The day will start looking at buildings from a high level — what are we looking for from our buildings in the future when it comes to efficiency, resiliency, performance? What are best practices, standards, and certifications that should be met? Then, we’ll go one level deeper, looking at some of the buildings systems and design. And finally, we’ll talk more about specific technologies (machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc.) and new building materials, in addition to diving into a few case studies.

Q: More generally, how do you see the built environment developing, and where do you place yourself in the industry?

A: The built environment, as an industry, is one of our society’s most important, yet most antiquated and siloed industries. Despite this, there are a lot of people and companies, including BuiltWorlds, who believe in moving the needle forward. Even in the past three to five years, we’ve seen so much positive change in embracing technology and opening up the lines of communication beyond one’s vendors and clients.

We’re seeing firms are using and embracing drones and augmented/virtual reality. Project management software and building information modeling (BIM) are now — dare I say — commonplace and expected, and that’s amazing.

There is no one place for all project stakeholders (architects, engineers, contractors, trades, real estate developers, owners, etc.) to come together. And that’s where BuiltWorlds places itself. Right in the intersection of everyone, drawing people in to have conversations with each other so that we can collectively innovate and improve on our practices, processes, and how we’re building our future cities and societies.
