An Interview With Neal And Yvette McGaffin, The Founders Of Reform RX

Below is our recent interview with Neal and Yvette McGaffin, the Founders of Reform RX:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: Yvette, has worked in the Pilates industry for 15 years and tested almost every kind of Pilates reformer. This instilled the initial idea to design a sleeker, more aesthetically pleasing reformer – one that would look less like a medieval torture device (as they’re commonly described as), and instead something that would better resemble a premium piece of stand-out furniture.

We partnered with Austin Owens, managing director of Grove Design, and it was during the development process that question was raised as to whether it would be possible to develop a machine that could track usage in the way most gym equipment can display user output. The pilates reformer provides an all-body workout, which involves working all muscle groups – so until now, nobody had even contemplated designing a smart reformer. It was from that point we realised we had an opportunity to revolutionise the at-home reformer Pilates market. Historically, this space had been confined to industry professionals or Pilates enthusiasts, as people lacked the confidence in using the reformer in their own homes. With the Reform RX, users will have access to a library of various class types – including how-to demos, led by world-leading instructors, in the comfort of their own home, enabling them to experience the same level of direction – and quality of class, that they would in a boutique studio.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement? 

A: We’ve spent over three years designing a commercial grade reformer, so to finally be at this launch stage – and see people, from the media to Pilates lovers across the globe talk about the Reform RX brand and our product, is very exciting. But this is merely the beginning. The last 18 months have been focused on honing our unique software that will offer an unrivalled Pilates at-home experience, and now our efforts will be to ensure we meet the delivery expectations of our clients.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering? 

A: The Reform RX is a world-first in that it’s the only superior, commercial grade reformer Pilates machine that can track user output. It’s designed with hidden resistance in a smart spine, rather than the traditional reformer box shape that has runners on each side. The smart spine houses a multitude of sensors and processors that enable the machine to track user movements to a thousandth of a second. These built-in data tracking capabilities can provide the user with their data on total calorie burn, speed of travel, heart rate and output.

Additional design innovations that reformer Pilates enthusiasts will notice are the absence of resistance springs that the user would manually have to hook on. With the Reform RX, we opted for button engagement to select resistance. It’s more simplified, and a safer method for the user. The ‘Rear Wing’ of the RX is inspired by the Pilates ‘wunda chair’ that is usually a separate piece of kit.  We have incorporated the functionality of this apparatus into our rear wing with two step platforms to work from when using the resistance loaded pedal for a myriad of exercises to keep this fun and interesting.

In terms of the software, the Reform RX is equipped with a 21” touchscreen tablet, that provides access to an abundance of class options that range in styles and intensities.

With community built into the tablet and companion app, you’re able to find other users, follow their activity, give high fives and emoji encouragement on their achievement as well as unlock badges for your own achievements. 

Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans? 

A: From November 30 2021, Reform RX will be available to pre-order in the United States, Canada and Australia, with first deliveries expected in Spring 2022.
