They have been creating professional grade video processing solutions as well as high-bright display technologies for many years, but always for others as designers. They felt there was a real and immediate need for people to actually be able to see a smart phone, laptop, camera, or even a drone controller screen outside in the sunlight. As a result, they decided to form this new venture and create the SunScreen line of products, starting with Eos. To find out more about their display technologies we sat down with Robert Rose, Managing Director at SunScreen Display Technologies:
Q: Robert, you’ve recently announced the SunScreen Eos; could you tell us something more?
A: The first SunScreen Eos allocation of production units are currently available through our crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo. SunScreen Eos is just the beginning for us. We anticipate expanding this technology into larger displays for outdoor use, while maintaining a design that is practical, attractive and most important, affordable. Before SunScreen, sunlight readable displays have been expensive devices primarily used in professional cinema and outdoor signage applications. No one has been thinking about smart phones, which everyone has and no one can see in the sun.

Q: What is unique about SunScreen Eos and how does it stand out from competition?
A: There are a few portable high bright monitors available from the cinema industry, but they are not consumer focused and cost many times what a SunScreen sells for. In fact, SunScreen is about one third the cost of the average smart phone. In addition to standard HDMI, the SunScreen Eos has a built-in receiver so the user can link their Android or iOS smart phone or tablet wirelessly. With the high capacity external battery, they can even charge their phone while in use with SunScreen. SunScreen Eos is designed to be modular, with various accessories and mounting options available for the users’ specific use case and application. At this time, there really isn’t any viable competition to consider for the average consumer.
Q: What are your plans for the next 12 months?
A: We are working to identify multiple verticals where SunScreen could have an impact and develop accessories to enable them. Take golf for example. We are developing a SunScreen package that includes mounting options for both electric push carts, as well as multi-unit charging stations for pro shops who might want to rent units to golfers, who are now all using apps and smart phone GPS on the links. There are many use cases we have identified for which we can customize the SunScreen Eos experience. Marine, NASCAR, hospitality, sporting events come to mind as places where sunlight viewable displays are needed just to name a few.

Q: More generally, how do you see the display systems developing, and where do you place yourself in the industry?
A: We think most of the focus for displays will continue to be an increase in resolution past 4K, while decreasing power consumption and footprint. Displays have also become a constant companion for everyone. As the smart phone continues to evolve it will also continue to replace other devices. However, the size of a phone limits it’s battery size and makes it impractical for sunlight use. As everyone knows, most phones die quickly with the displays turned up, and are not really viewable in sunlight anyway. SunScreen, and subsequent high bright companion displays for smart phones, will occupy an important place in the connected world. We expect to be leading the design, manufacturing and deployment of high-bright display systems into that marketplace for years to come.
