Below is our recent interview with Hamish Jenkinson, CEO at The Department:
Q: Could you tell us something more about your agency?
A: The Department is an independent immersive agency based in London. We design multi-sensory, hyper-reality experiences for some of the world’s biggest brands and events, and most recently this show for BMW.
We deliver all aspects of the project from creative conception through to live project implementation, combining cutting-edge technology with humanising theatrics to create experiences which are technically masterful and purposely human.
Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?
A: To deliver such a complex and highly technical projection mapping show onto such an iconic building is extremely nail-biting as you don’t have the luxury of rehearsals and tests. Full credit to our producer Emma Scott who delivered a perfect and seamless show. We are particularly proud to have developed and nurtured Emma since joining as an intern a few years ago.
Our client BMW was thrilled to see CNN – amongst others – covering the event. Earned media is always the priority for any brand considering such activations so to receive so much press coverage is a job well done.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?
A: We believe that immersive experiences have an incredible power to enhance audience/consumer understanding and appreciation of a brand. Our services continue to include content creation and theatrical performance but this is fused with cutting-edge technlogy that push the boundaries of immersive marketing – Real-engine, XR, AR, VR, Metaverse strategy and avatar experiences.
Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans?
A: Well we’re keeping busy with some major sporting events and their opening ceremonies, plus immersive events for well known NGOs. Whilst we pivoted to virtual events during the pandemic it is great to be back doing what we love, which is ‘live’ plus digital.
We will also be releasing a documentary under our ‘Immersive Futures’ platform to open up discussion around the Metaverse – helping brands to navigate what it is, what to do in it and how it can add value. Watch this space….

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?
A: Our team of trailblazing creatives come with so much experience, energy and vision that to be a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ during a creative brainstorm is truly inspirational. Our clients often ask how we can make those ideas reality? Well we can and we do. We just don’t give our secrets away…
