Wendu Wearable: T-Shirt To Cool And Warm Controlled By Your Phone

Listen to this article

David Requena Polonio first became familiar with this technology while working for a medical device company in 2015 and he started working on a design which required less power to be able to apply them to clothes. While working for another company, he met Fran Navas, a chemist with a PhD in materials Science, he told him of his ideas and they immediately started working on the prototype. By December 2016 they formed their company called Wendu Wearable along with a businessman from Cordoba, Sergio Rodríguez, and another partner in the US. Now, between all the partners and employees – engineers, a fashion designer and a marketing coordinator – there are eight total people who have helped shape these futuristic t-shirts.

Below is our interview with David Requena Polonio, Founder and CEO of Wendu Wearable:

Q: You’ve recently reached your funding goals on KickStarter campaign; could you tell us something more?

A: The reception and the enthusiasm we have received for this futuristic technology has been incredible. Everyone has imagined having the ability to somehow regulate the temperature of their immediate environment and now we have managed to make that a reality.

We have also encountered some naysayers who just don’t understand how the garments will provide cooling. We do not want anyone taking acts just in faith, so we are working hard and putting forth tons of effort in trying to get as many people as possible to try the product . Feeling will be believing!

Q: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in launching your business and how did you overcome it? Tell us something about thermal conduction technology?

A: There are many new ideas and product concepts which look took fill gaps while others look to transform markets. As a startup in the latter of these two, we find that because there are currently no similar products, it has been difficult to partner with companies which could typically facilitate the development and production of some of our components. These hurdles have forced us to continue to develop internally and we have made immense progress in the shirts performance as a result.

The garments are made of a cotton knit which contains flexible electronics in four points of the chest and back which are protected by a unique composite of silicone allowing the garment to be washed in up to 30 C/86 F. With the use of thermal imaging cameras, we determined the areas of the body that are covered by the shirt which expel the most heat. The analysis helped develop a design which looks to effectively control the bodies temperature through those areas.

Q: What are your plans for 2018?

A: In 2018 we will primarily work on finalizing and implementing the production process. We will also finalize relationships with several international commercial contacts. Currently these include the United States and numerous Arab countries, where the technology has received lots of interest, due to extreme living and work conditions. We will also begin to look to apply our solution into the health sector, since there are many conditions and applications where the use of this technology can benefit patients by helping to regulate body temperature.
