Smart Reporting Improves Patient Outcomes By Providing Intuitive Structured Reporting Software

Listen to this article

Smart Reporting is a young company that offers software solutions for structured medical reporting created by physicians for physicians. The Munich-based company was founded in 2014 by Prof. Dr. Wieland Sommer who is a professional radiologist. Report writing has been an inherently unsatisfying, time-consuming task, adding extra hours to his everyday workload. This prompted Wieland Sommer to set up the company that nowadays consists of a team of 12 employees and is supported by working students and external physicians.

Below is our interview with Dr. Wieland Sommer, the Founder and CEO of Smart Reporting:

Q: What exactly is Smart Radiology and how does it stand out?

A: Smart Radiology is a modern software that provides radiologists with an intuitive tool for structured reporting. It may be combined with existing IT-systems in-house, and provides a platform where radiologists can use ready-made report templates or use the ‘Editor’ tool to create their very own templates. Template contents are enriched with information boxes and clickable graphic elements that speed up report writing for both experienced and inexperienced professionals. In collaboration with the software provider Nuance, a speech recognition and control tool that further speeds up the process has now been implemented. Moreover, Smart Radiology may also be used to collect clinical data sets without breaching patient confidentiality. In the long run, this may lead to even better diagnoses and treatment of patients.

Q: You’ve recently received funding from EU for “ImageREPORT”; could you tell us something more?

A: ImageREPORT is a collaborative project between Smart Reporting and various European partners. The project funding had been awarded by “Eurostars”, which is a joint program between EUREKA and the European Commission. The money will be used to develop an intelligent image analysis and reporting software that can be used to analyze X-ray images and computertomography (CT) scans of the thorax. To achieve this, intelligent image recognition for the evaluation of medical imaging is combined with semiautomated structured reporting. ImageREPORT aims at significantly improving radiological care by linking image analysis and structured reporting.

Q: Who are the primary users of Smart Reporting and what are some of the key challenges you are helping them solve?

A: We serve a wide spectrum of users from private practitioners to large healthcare providers. All of them struggle with the old problem of incosistent free-text reports that cause misunderstanding, are time-consuming and may also lead to treatment errors. By providing them with an easy-to-use tool we are helping them to optimize their workflow, improving patient outcomes.
