Below is our recent interview with Deborah Morrish, the Founder of Deborah Morrish and Associates:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your work?

A: I’m sure most everyone is familiar with negotiation in one form or another. Anyone who has a spouse or children is likely quite familiar with some forms of negotiation. Though, that is merely a glimpse at the surface: it really is a science. People have devoted their lives to its study in an effort to make the world a better place. Think crisis negotiators, people who work as ambassadors, etc. My team and I specialise in dispute resolution, but a very specific form of it: arbitration. It is an alternative form of negotiation that helps people/companies engaged in a dispute to avoid court. Basically, both sides agree to have the disagreement addressed by a professional arbitrator and we are charged with making a sound, legally binding decision on the dispute. I now have decades of experience in arbitration and I take the onus of it incredibly seriously.

Q: Can you give us more insight into what makes you and your company unique?

A: I would say what sets us apart is that we have global experience in arbitration. All that experience allows for us to provide a well-rounded approach to our work. It also allows for us to understand any cultural differences that might be at play in the negotiation process.

Also, I would say that we have a level of professionalism and thoroughness to what we do. We don’t take shortcuts—ever. We make sure that we understand the depth and breadth of a dispute and what it means to all parties involved, so that we can offer the best possible solution.

Further, we are all completely committed to the work. Everyone involved wants to be there. We want to find solutions and we want to do so efficiently and effectively.

Q: Any highlights of recent company developments?

A: Even though I’m Canadian I do have an appreciation for good presidential quotes from American presidents. I remember this quote from Abraham Lincoln: “I do the very best I know how—the very best I can; and I mean to keep on doing so until the end.” I don’t have any big, bold strategy for growth. In my line of work, reputation is everything. We plan to keep doing what we are doing to the best of our ability; to help ease some of the tension in the world by providing dispute resolution that has a sense of depth and fairness.

Q: Can you give us insights into your services / locations / growth?

A: We specialise in dispute resolution through arbitration and are located in Toronto, Ontario. As I said previously, we are not trying to become a massive company, we are focused on doing our very best. By focusing on quality work, I believe growth will continue organically.

Q: What trends in the rapidly changing corporate landscape excite your leadership team the most?

A: I know there were very few silver linings from the pandemic. It has been an awful experience for all of us to endure. However, my team is noticing a trend in the industry that speaks to… a greater willingness of people to sit down together and find solutions outside of the court system. We, as human beings, are meant to evolve from our experiences, and I think many of us have.
