KWHCoin is a Blockchain-based community, ecosystem and cryptocurrency backed by units of clean, renewable energy. Physical units of kWh energy are leveraged from multiple sources including smart meters, sensor readings and green button data. This measurable output is tokenized on the Blockchain to create KWH tokens. Below is our recent interview with Girard Newkirk, CEO at KWHCoin:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to KWHCoin?
A: KWHCoin and The Grid will provide an alternative marketplace for the exchange of clean energy; providing a model for a decentralized, network owned energy company in the future. In Africa and southwest Asia there are currently almost 2 billion people living without daily access to electricity, but with Our investment microgram development and the ICO donation structure, we aim to provide people with an opportunity for change.
Q: How does KWHCoin work?
A: KWHCoin gives community members the ability to purchase renewable energy from a local generation source. Local energy generation reduces the losses and extends the lifespan of existing transmission infrastructure. Local generation also minimizes transmission costs for the customer and with KWHCoin this keeps value and investment in local economies.

Q: You’ve recently become participating member in Green Button Data Alliance; could you tell us something more?
A: The green button partnership directly aligns us with core values and mission to empower the edges of the grid (the smaller distributed energy resources like solar panels and electric vehicles) enabling their energy usage data to provide the platform for renewable energy generation and distribution. Our Blockchain will leverage this data as foundation for our ecosystem to deploy the internet of energy and build data footprints for ancillary services in mature markets. This is another strategic step in KWHCoin deploying our unique business model which allows energy usage data paired with Blockchain technology securing and verifying transactions to enable the development of an ecosystem which empowers a sustainable energy future advancing renewable generation sources.
Q: How does it feel to be a finalist at the Startup World Cup in California?
A: It is very exciting that we are going to the finals in San Francisco. We were in great company at the World Blockchain Summit and winning at the regionals is a testament to our team’s hard work and passion!
Q: What’s the vision that guides you?
A: Our main difference between competing energy tokens is our goal to improve the lives of the 1.2 billion people across the globe without reliable energy access. Our mission is to lead the change in supplying humanity with clean energy. With support from clean energy advocated, nations, companies and charitable organizations we plan to provide a viable solution for the 1.2 billion people who currently lack access to energy. The Grid will provide 100% clean, renewable energy, direct from solar and distributes energy resources, that access all renewable elements. Our long-term vision is to expand our token model to include development of micro-grid technology throughout the entire African Hemisphere and Caribbean Islands.

Q: What is on the roadmap for KWHCoin moving forward?
A: We have developed software and data science team. This will be an ongoing process as our platform expands. We have our development team on board and are in the process of moving forward with micro-grid installation. We have exceeded roadmap expectations. We now have over 100 partnerships in over 30 countries which has far exceeded our initial projections.
