Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Selfin?
A: Selfin is a photo sharing application for IOS, which doesn’t share your data, can be used horizontally, and help its users to monetize their account. Selfin respects the time of its users and as such, they are able to see the posts from the people they follow without the interruption of any ads. Users can also use Selfin horizontally and this landscape mode gives more freedom to the user when it comes to taking and posting landscape photos. Selfin also pays its users on the basis of the total stars that they have. When you publish a post, and get a like or super like, your stars will increase and if you have more than a specific amount of stars, Selfin acknowledges you as an influencer. With this status change, your stars become self-stars. After becoming an influencer, Selfin pays you per post.

Q: Can you give us insights into your product? How does it work?
A: Selfin currently works on IOS only and as such, you have to have an IPhone. After installing Selfin from Appstore, you can initiate the sign up process. Our signup process takes no more than two minutes and you need to verify your account because we want real users not fake users.
After Signup you will be able to see “Feed”, “Discover”, “Camera”, Notifications” and “Profile”.
You will see you’re the posts of the accounts you are followings and all the other users’ post on “Discover”. You can turn your phone sideways to experience the horizontal interface and the true format of your post. When you get a like or super like, you can see them under “Notifications”. You can check your star amount, posts, and everything related to your profile under the “Profile” section.
When you click on the “Camera”, you will realize that we don’t have a capture button because we don’t want to limit our users experience. You simply need to swipe up to take a picture. It is that simple. You can even schedule your posts to make sure you don’t forget or miss anything.
Q: But why horizontal?
A: Why not! People have a very wide angle of vision so why not take advantage of it and why not make a horizontal social media app.
There have been many variants for photo and movie formats, for several reasons. This variation in format can be attributed more to what is most natural to see than any technical limitation. If you think about your natural field of vision, you will realize that you can see a greater field horizontally than vertically.
Let’s consider current social media apps. You take a landscape picture and published it on your feed. The post is horizontal but the apps interface is vertical which means that you are seeing the landscape photo on a vertical interface which shrinks the image and is limited in showing the real size of it. But when it comes to Selfin, you won’t face this problem because we already have a horizontal interface.
Q: Why is now the time for a technology solution like Selfin?
A: Now is the best time for Selfin because these big Social Media corporations are selling your date to advertisers and third parties. In 2018, Facebook faced more than 28 problems relevant to data protection and the numbers are expected to increase in 2019. These corporations are dependent on selling (or renting) your data because it is their foundation and business plan. On Facebook and Instagram, every 7th post you see on your feed is an advertisement.

Q: One of the cool Selfin’s features is that you pay your users – is that true?
A: Yes, this feature is a primary benefit to the user from Selfin. When you open Selfin and go to your account, you will see your Stars. The number of your stars will increase or decrease based on your post, following and followers, likes and super likes. When you have more than specific amount of stars, your stars will be self-stars and you will become an influencer. When you become an influencer, you can start monetizing your account by just doing what you love, being social.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: Me (Akin Nefesogullari), and my cofounder and CTO Marlon Monroy are here to give the data back to the users. The reason we started Selfin is, our self-experienced displeasure with the current system. We don’t want to see ads; want our data to stay in the company; use the app horizontally; and want to monetize our accounts by just being social. We are currently working on improving the design and user experience on Selfin. We are also recruiting Brand Ambassadors from High Schools and Universities to tell our story.
