Music Collaboration Platform Varidada Aims To Connect Musicians Worldwide Through Mega Rock Bands

Listen to this article

In real life, it’s often hard to find the perfect buddies in your local area who also love your favorite songs, so when you perform together someone may be unhappy. Varidada is the center stage for anyone on the Internet, so it opens a door for unlimited opportunities. There is no audition process or gatekeeper. Simply plug in to your computer and record your instrument or vocal part. Anyone who knows the song may fill in other parts. You can mix different people’s tracks together and save as your band. In a nutshell, Varidada lets you build a musical connection with potentially anyone in the world. Below is our interview with Ruofeng Chen, the Founder of Varidada:

Ruofeng Chen

Q: What motivates you to build Varidada?

A: I am a former member of Distributed Music Group at Georgia Tech. My main research was to study collaborative music creativity in a networked environment. Think about the freedom brought by social networks – You can say things that you will never in real life. The same thing applies to music. Knowing that no one can point a finger, you can fully unleash your creativity and perform it any way you want. Varidada started as my experiment to study music creativity on the full Internet. In the current cover song setup, people have exhibited strong tendency to embedding their personal signature or create totally new sound that differs from original. As more and more people participate, diverse styles will emerge. It’s enlightening to learn how people handle the same material differently. The Varidada platform has unlimited possibilities and works as a natural incubator for new genres and the next generation of rock stars.

Q: What is Varidada’s Practice Mode used for?

A: Practice Mode is a great by-product that naturally came up. As people jam for fun and connection, a library of perfectly synced multi-track audio content is built up at the same time. Music is a hard language that requires you to allocate a large chunk of time to practice. Practice Mode is designed to reduce frustrations in your daily practice routine by leveraging the library. It lets you focus on parts that’s not performance-ready yet and automatically monitor your progress. You can start with a slow speed and gradually increase it. With one click you can toggle the reference track on and off to compare your playing with pros.

Q: Who are your targeted users?

A: Professional musicians use Varidada to exhibit their skills and build their profiles for career development. Amateur musicians use Varidada to jam with people outside their circles. For anyone else who likes singing or owns an instrument, they use Varidada for entertainment and education.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: For 2017, we have three equally important plans:

1. Go mobile. Our future products will all be available on Android and iOS devices.
2. Go original. We will focus on online collaboration of original music and provide a way to distribute to online stores to help aspiring musicians gain exposure.
3. Go local. Disruption often enlarges the gap between the new and the traditional. We will work on bringing online communities back to local.
