Below is our recent interview with Sarah Thompson, Executive Vice President of Marketing at SixFifty:

Q: Sarah, can you tell us something more about SixFifty?

A: SixFifty is the technology arm of the law firm Wilson Sonsini. Our goal is to make creating and updating corporate legal documents simple and certain. We take the hassle and guesswork out of employment and privacy documents and ensure compliance with constant monitoring.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: Everyday more talent is working remotely from across the nation. This presents a challenge as companies are forced to comply with employment laws of various states. Companies that adjust to this challenge quickly and efficiently–and are able to hire employees in different locations–will be at a significant advantage in the race for talent.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?

A: Each state has unique laws and requirements for hiring employees. In some states, noncompetes are allowed. In others, they’re prohibited. Employers are often required to register in various places: the secretary of state, the tax office, etc. Employers frequently must post specific safety notices in break rooms or via email. California requires over 20 policies in the company’s employee handbook. Idaho requires less than five.

With employees working all over the nation, it can be difficult for employers to keep this type of state-by-state information straight.

To help, SixFifty aggregated every requirement in every state around hiring and managing employees. SixFfity then organized that data into easy-to-follow guides for each state. All companies need to do is answer a few questions about their business and SixFifty will provide a customized guide to having employees in that state.

Q: What can we expect from your company in the next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: We want to make top-tier legal expertise more accessible. To do that, we are automating as many legal documents as we can in two areas: employment law and privacy law. We are also building tools to help GC’s manage everyday legal tasks, such as tracking signatures and acknowledgements on legal documents.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: SixFifty’s pro bono program builds free tools for people who need legal help. Recently, SixFifty created free tools to help Ukrainian citizens file for Temporary Protected Status and asylum in the United States. We are currently building free tools for estate planning and protective orders, as well as helping Utahans legally change their name and gender marker.
