Hofmann Sausage Company – The Iconic Brand Represents Family Time, Backyard Cookouts With Friends, And Tailgates At Stadiums

Below is our recent interview with Rebecca Baker, Chief Marketing Officer at Hofmann Sausage Company:

Q: How long has Hofmann Sausage Company been around?

A: Our company is one of the oldest hot dog and sausage manufacturers in the United States. This year marks our 140th Year Anniversary.

Q: Is it a family owned and operated business?

A: The Hofmann/Flook family owned and operated it from 1879 through 2012 when a group of investors purchased it. Many of the investors grew up in Upstate New York including in Central New York loving the brand. One of the family members, Rusty Flook, a fifth generation sausage maker, is still involved.

Q: What can you contribute to the longevity of Hofmann Sausage Company while other companies have come and gone?

A: Our products are amazing and we have extreme brand loyalty. People who grew up eating our hot dogs and sausages remain fans for life. Some of our recipes haven’t changed in well over a hundred years. We also have employees who have been with our company for years giving us consistency in our customer service. We believe in an elevated product experience from customer to consumer.

Q: What products does Hofmann make?

A: Our classic Hofmann products and the ones which made us famous are our Snappy Grillers and German Brand Franks, however, we also make mustards, beef franks, Italian Sausage, Kielbasa, Bologna and some products with modern taste profiles like Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage and Franks. We even carry Hunter Sticks and Beef Jerky in a variety of flavors like Original, Teriyaki, Honey Pepper Bacon, Garlic, Hot & Spicy, Jalapeno Cheddar, and Prime Rib.

Q: Where are your products available?

A: We are distributed in grocery retail stores, big box and convenience stores across the eastern United States. We are in Publix, Wegmans, Harris Teeter, Giant, Aldi and other stores.

Q: What is your number one selling product?

A: The Natural Casing German Brand Frank is our number one selling product, but the Snappy Griller does really well in Central New York, where it was introduced in 1934. This product is made with egg whites, dried milk, pork, veal, and a specific spice profile. Beef hot dogs sell well in the Mid-Atlantic.

Q: What makes your products different than other hot dogs and sausages?

A: We only use quality cuts of meat and that is our top ingredient. While some people may thing that all hot dogs are alike, they aren’t. Our products are made with quality ingredients and are handcrafted products…no fillers, by-products, no added MSG, and they are gluten free. We were gluten free before gluten free was “a thing.”

Q: What do your products sell for?

A: They range from about $3.00 for mustard and a minimum of $4.99 for hot dog or sausage packages up to $16.99 for a 42 oz bag retail but larger packages are available online.

Q: Are there any new products you can tell us about?

A: We just launched the Monumental Dog, which is an all-beef 6/1lb hot dog available in-stadium at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. and the retail pack at Giant Food Stores. In addition, Hunter Sticks and Beef Jerky were introduced last year, with much success, so we are coming out with other jerky flavors soon. Currently Prime Rib Smoked Beef Jerky is the only flavor of jerky but is the king of flavors.
